Nvidia beats estimates and guides to $108 billion next quarter

Only nine companies in the S&P 500 have ever reported a quarter with $100 billion or more in revenue. Nvidia just told Wall Street it expects to clear that bar next quarter, with room to spare.

The guidance number is $108 billion. Analysts were modeling $103.9 billion. That’s the headline out of Nvidia’s fiscal second-quarter report, and it’s a bigger deal than the quarter that just closed.

Because the quarter that just closed was, by the standards this company has set for itself, routine. Revenue came in at $96.2 billion against a consensus of $92.27 billion. Earnings per share hit $2.22 versus $2.09 expected. Beat, beat, move on.

The data center number is the whole story

Data center revenue was $89 billion. The Street wanted $85.4 billion.

Do the arithmetic and data center accounts for roughly 92% of everything Nvidia sold last quarter. Gaming, automotive, professional visualization, all of it fits in the remainder. This is a company that makes AI infrastructure and does a few other things on the side.

CEO Jensen Huang framed it the way he’s been framing it for a while now. “AI has reached its inflection point,” Huang said. “Now compute is revenue … And demand is accelerating.”

You can read that as a chief executive doing his job on an earnings call. You can also read it as a description of what the data center line item is doing, which is growing past the point where any single customer or product cycle explains it.

Margins are going the wrong way, slightly

Here’s the part that didn’t make the press release headline. Nvidia guided gross margin to 74% next quarter, down from 75% in the second quarter.

One point. It’s small, and it’s the kind of thing that gets waved away when revenue is compounding this fast. But margin direction matters more than margin level when you’re trying to figure out whether a company still has pricing power or is starting to spend more to hold its position.

Watch that line over the next two or three quarters. It’s the cheapest tell you’ll get.

The market shrugged

Shares moved modestly lower in after-hours trading. A beat on revenue, a beat on earnings, guidance above consensus, and the stock went down.

NVDA closed at $207.78. That’s the number to anchor against when you’re reading the after-hours move, because the reaction to a beat says more about what was already priced in than the beat itself does.

Expectations, at this point, are doing a lot of the work.

Crypto barely blinked

Bitcoin stayed in a tight range just above $78,000 through the report.

That’s worth noting mostly for what it isn’t. There was a stretch when Nvidia results and crypto prices moved on the same news, back when GPUs and mining shared a supply chain. That link has thinned out considerably, and this quarter is a decent illustration: the biggest AI hardware print of the cycle landed and bitcoin didn’t move out of its range.

What the $108 billion actually means

Nvidia isn’t guiding to a nice round number by accident, but it’s not manufacturing one either. The $100 billion threshold has been crossed by nine S&P 500 companies in the index’s history. Nvidia is guiding $8 billion past it.

The gap between guidance and consensus, $4.1 billion, is itself larger than the quarterly revenue of most public companies. That’s the scale we’re operating at now, and it’s why a single point of gross margin compression is the more interesting number in the release.

What to actually watch

If you’re tracking this stock or just tracking AI infrastructure spending as a proxy for the whole sector, ignore the beat. Beats are the baseline expectation here and have been for eight quarters.

Track two things instead. Whether data center revenue keeps outgrowing the guidance Nvidia gives for it, and whether that 74% gross margin holds or keeps sliding. The first tells you demand is still ahead of what management will commit to publicly. The second tells you what it costs to keep serving it.

Everything else in this report is noise around those two lines.
