Ox Alpha appeared out of nowhere — so who’s actually running the new ‘stealth model’?

A free AI model showed up on OpenRouter on Thursday with no name attached to it, and within 48 hours a chunk of the internet had decided it was Chinese, then decided it wasn’t, then decided it might be Microsoft.

The model is called Ox Alpha. Its OpenRouter listing describes it as “a reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workload.” That’s the entire pitch. No lab, no paper, no logo.

What the listing does say is that Ox Alpha is a “stealth model” and that it was “developed and operated by a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview.”

The endorsement that poured gasoline on it

Stripe CEO Patrick Collison called Ox Alpha “very impressive” on X. Worth noting who’s talking: Stripe is acquiring OpenRouter, the platform hosting the thing.

That’s not a knock on the assessment. It’s context you should have when you’re reading a CEO praising a model on a platform his company is buying.

Everyone assumed China first

The early money went to Z.ai, the Chinese company behind the GLM models. AI analyst Andrew Curran posted on Friday that the initial speculation focused on GLM, but that “this morning people seem less sure of anything.”

That sentence is the most honest summary of this whole episode.

Then the theory moved to Redmond

An article on Wccftech first suggested the evidence pointed to GLM. An update to the same piece floated a different possibility: that Ox Alpha could be an unreleased version of Microsoft’s MAI.

Two theories, one article, less than a weekend apart. That’s the state of the evidence.

Reddit did what Reddit does

On Reddit there’s at least one post declaring flatly that Ox Alpha “can’t be the Chinese.” There’s another expressing “high confidence” that it is, in fact, Chinese.

Both posts are confident. Only one of them can be right, and neither has shown anything that settles it.

Why stealth launches happen at all

Dropping a model anonymously on a router isn’t new behavior, and it isn’t accidental. You get usage data and public reaction without your name attached to a bad first impression.

If it lands, you claim it. If it doesn’t, it quietly stops being available and nobody writes the postmortem.

The tell here is the word “preview” in the listing. Whoever built this expects to reveal themselves eventually. They just don’t want to do it yet.

What you can actually verify right now

The model is free on OpenRouter. It’s pitched at coding, sustained agentic work and production workloads. And the operator is anonymous by choice.

Everything past that is people reading tea leaves in output formatting and refusal patterns, which is a genuinely bad way to identify a lab and an extremely popular one.

So use it if the price is right, because free is free. But don’t build anything you care about on a model whose operator you can’t name, whose availability nobody has guaranteed, and whose data handling you can’t audit because you don’t know whose servers it’s running on.
