Prime Video isn’t giving you a single evening to miss the guy. The finale hands the baton straight to Neagley, a spin-off built inside Lee Child’s universe that arrives fully loaded on premiere day.
Why she’s been missing all season
Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) has spent season 4 working a high-stakes conspiracy across Philadelphia, and Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) hasn’t been around for it. The assumption was always that she was busy elsewhere. She was. She was setting up her own operation.
Neagley is a former Master Sergeant from the 110th MP Special Investigations Unit who went corporate, working now as a private investigator in Chicago. She’s been the smartest person in Reacher’s orbit since her franchise debut in the fifth episode of the show, and Sten has been stealing scenes in the part across three seasons.
Now she’s out of his shadow, pulled back in by a suspicious death from her past.
The case that starts it
A close friend of Neagley’s turns up dead on a pair of train tracks in Chicago, ruled a drug-related suicide. She doesn’t buy it. She starts asking questions at the scene, and almost immediately she’s the one being hunted by a conspiracy that runs much further than one body.
If you’ve read Child’s novels, the shape of this is familiar. A highly capable investigator working the fringes of the law, willing to ignore the rules when the facts don’t add up.
But there’s a real difference here, and it’s the reason the show has something Reacher doesn’t. Neagley isn’t drifting from town to town. She lives in Chicago. She has a career, relationships and her own methods, which gives the series an anchor Reacher has never wanted.
No homework required
Don’t worry if you’ve fallen behind on your Reacher lore. The show carries the franchise’s hard-hitting DNA, but it’s built as a standalone thriller. You can walk in cold.
That extends to the plot itself. Ritchson is confirmed to drop by as the big guy, but these eight episodes aren’t adapting any specific Child novel. This is a completely original story, which makes it uncharted territory for everyone, including readers who’ve done all the homework.
Child is writing a standalone Neagley novel of his own, Zero Margin, due in 2027 after the show airs.
The people behind it are the same people
Reacher mastermind Nick Santora co-created the spin-off with Nicholas Wootton. Sam Hill, a veteran Reacher director, helmed the first two episodes. Child stays deeply involved as an executive producer.
She’s also the most natural character in the books to build a spin-off around. She’s one of the few people Reacher genuinely trusts, and she’s grown more prominent in the novels over the years.
Neagley premieres Wednesday, September 16, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video, with all eight episodes available that day. The eighth and final episode of Reacher Season 4 arrives the same day. Finish one, start the other.
