Nintendo used its Nintendo Direct on Wednesday to confirm what a lot of people had been waiting on: CAPCOM is bringing the Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 remakes to Switch 2 through the Nintendo eShop on October 16. Physical releases follow on January 29.
Three remakes, one drop date. That’s the whole pitch, and it’s a good one.
Where these games have already been
The Resident Evil 2 remake is the elder statesman here. CAPCOM launched it for PC, PS4 and Xbox One in January 2019, then brought it to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in June 2022. Switch owners got a cloud version, which is a polite way of saying they got an asterisk.
The remake swapped the original’s fixed camera angles for third-person gameplay, closer to what Resident Evil 4 introduced. If you’ve only played the 1998 version, that shift changes how the whole thing feels.
Resident Evil 3’s remake arrived in April 2020 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC via Steam. That release also included Resident Evil: Resistance, the online game that spent its development cycle going by “Project Resistance.”
The one that sold 5 million copies
Resident Evil 4’s remake landed in March 2023 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and it’s moved more than 5 million copies worldwide. CAPCOM rebuilt it with what it calls a “reimagined storyline” and a new graphical art style running on the company’s proprietary RE engine.
It didn’t stop at consoles either. December 2023 brought the game to Mac, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and every iPad packing an M1 chip or later.
So the Switch 2 version isn’t some experiment. It’s the fourth or fifth stop on a tour that’s been running for years, and the hardware is finally there to run it natively.
Why the January date matters
The three-month gap between digital and physical is the detail worth circling. If you want boxes on a shelf, you’re waiting until January 29. If you just want to play Leon’s Spain trip on a handheld in October, the eShop has you covered.
Mark the calendar. October 16, then January 29. Raccoon City doesn’t wait.
