Sky Mavis transfers Axie Classic to community
Sky Mavis is set to hand over development responsibilities of Axie Classic to its community following the conclusion of Competitive Season 16. This season, which started on August 12 and will run until September 2, offers over 36,000 bAXS in rewards for competitions, including 14,500 bAXS for the top 30 guilds and 4,500 bAXS for the top Arena players.
Once Season 16 and its associated Mini Tournaments conclude, Sky Mavis will pause regular competitive seasons and development of Axie Classic. Classic quests will also be removed from the Bounty Board effective September 10.
Rather than discontinuing the game, Sky Mavis aims to facilitate the community’s takeover of its future direction. “The details aren’t settled yet,” the company said, indicating no established governance structure or funding mechanism for this transition.
Axie Classic serves as the original card-battling version of Axie Infinity, remaining integral to its early growth. Despite shifting focus to newer experiences, Sky Mavis has consistently supported Classic through tournaments and seasonal events, acknowledging this in its recent announcement.
The conclusion of Season 16 signifies an end of an era, with players competing for final spots in the Classic Champions Invitational. The broader implications of the community-driven transition will unfold as details develop, potentially serving as a pivotal test of player ownership in blockchain gaming.
