Snapchat just drew a line that most platforms have been dancing around for a year: if a video was made entirely by AI, it can’t get recommended in Spotlight.

Not demoted. Not labeled. Not eligible.

The company announced the change Friday, saying its recommendation systems will be tuned so that only videos created by real people qualify for Spotlight recommendations.

That’s a sharper stance than the usual platform response to AI slop, which tends to be a report button and a promise to look into it.

What Snapchat actually said

In its blog post, Snapchat said it wants Spotlight to “remain a place where people can discover authentic creativity from real people, because we believe there’s enduring value in rewarding original perspectives, personal storytelling, and the moments that people choose to create and share themselves.”

Read that carefully and you’ll notice the hedge. The company isn’t rejecting AI outright.

Creators can still use Snapchat’s own AI creative tools to enhance or edit what they post. The wall is around fully generated video, not AI-assisted video, and that distinction is going to be the whole ballgame in practice.

This has been building since April

The move fits a pattern Snapchat set months ago. In April, the company said users would see less AI-generated content in Spotlight as part of a broader push back toward original posts.

So this isn’t a reaction to a bad news cycle. It’s the next step in something the company has been telegraphing.

Everyone else is scrambling too

The industry response to AI slop has gotten loud, and the approaches vary wildly in how much teeth they have.

LinkedIn shipped a button that literally says “seems like AI slop,” letting users flag posts that look machine-written. Substack built a tool to help readers spot AI-written newsletters.

Both put the work on users. Snapchat is putting it on the algorithm, which is the harder and more meaningful version.

Meta went the other direction and got burned. Earlier this month the company faced significant backlash over an Instagram feature that let users modify photos from public accounts using AI, and it pulled the feature entirely.

YouTube’s version has money attached

The closest comparison to what Snapchat is doing comes from YouTube, which tightened its monetization policies so “inauthentic content” can’t earn money.

That covers generic, repetitive or template-based content, plus anything featuring AI personas discussing sensitive topics like health and finance.

YouTube’s rule hits creators in the wallet. Snapchat’s hits them in the distribution, which for a Spotlight creator amounts to roughly the same thing.

The other Spotlight change you might have missed

Snapchat has been rewriting Spotlight’s rules on more than one front. Last month it added content controls for underage users: anyone aged 13 to 15 can only share Spotlight posts with people they follow back, a measure aimed at guarding against doxxing.

Taken together, Spotlight looks less like an open discovery feed every month and more like a curated-by-restriction one.

What to watch for if you post there

The practical question nobody has answered is enforcement. Snapchat hasn’t said how it distinguishes a fully AI-generated video from one heavily edited with its own AI tools, and that gray zone is where most creators actually work.

If you’re making Spotlight content, the safe read is simple: keep a real person, a real camera or a real moment somewhere in the frame, and treat the AI tools as garnish. Snapchat just told you exactly which side of that line pays.
