Chadley is getting a bigger role. Not a smaller one. Not a quiet retirement into the credits. A bigger one, in the main story of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and the people who spent two games muting his voice lines are taking it about as well as you’d guess.
Now that Gamescom 2026 has wrapped, information about FF7 Revelation is starting to trickle out. Same pattern as Summer Game Fest back in June: director Naoki Hamaguchi does the interview rounds, and the details land in pieces.
We’ve come away with new playable characters, details on the game’s map, and changes to the story from the 1997 original. That last category is where things got loud.
Story changes were never the surprise here
Anyone who played the first two entries in the remake trilogy knows the team doesn’t treat the original script as scripture. FF7 Rebirth made enough changes and additions to feel like its own thing rather than a rerun.
So the news that Revelation might push even further isn’t shocking. Expected, honestly.
But one confirmed change has fans genuinely angry. And it’s hard to argue with them.
What Hamaguchi actually said
Genki_JPN posted quotes on X from Hamaguchi about the RPG, specifically about Chadley’s role in the finale.
“In the previous game, in Rebirth his role was kind of a guide, a tutorial to lead people into the side content. But his role has actually changed for Revelation. We have prepared some scenes where he plays a very integral part, a strong role in the main story itself. I can’t tell you now whether he does become more powerful than Sephiroth or not, but you are going to have to see in the game and I hope you look forward to finding out,” Hamaguchi said.
Read that again. A “strong role in the main story itself.” Not a side quest dispenser. Not the guy who wants you to scan more fiends.
And the Sephiroth line, dangled and then withheld, is doing a lot of work.
The part that makes it stranger
Hamaguchi has already said the team is fully aware of how much people despise Chadley. That’s the context this lands in.
Knowing the audience hates a character and then handing him more screen time is a choice. A bold one.
The reaction was about what you’d predict.
The replies are a graveyard
The X post is mostly negative comments, with a handful of Chadley defenders scattered in. The complaints center on him becoming a playable character or getting a bigger role, though a few people floated the idea that fighting him as a super boss could be fun.
“Please… no more Chadley…” one comment reads.
“The only way to redeem him to me is turning him into a super boss,” another fan wrote.
“Oh look, things nobody asked for and definitely didn’t want,” reads another post.
“Doubling down on the worst part of the remake games is not a sound idea,” wrote yet another certified Chadley hater.
The cope theories
Some replies insist Hamaguchi is joking. Playing with the fanbase, dangling bait, enjoying himself.
Others returned to the popular theory that Chadley is basically a character insert for Hamaguchi himself, which would explain a lot about why he keeps surviving every round of cuts.
Neither theory changes the quote.
Why this one stings
Reasoning aside, most people do not like this character. That’s the whole equation.
When the director of a trilogy’s final chapter tells you you’ll be seeing more of the guy you’ve been avoiding for two games, it registers as bad news, not a tease.
The super boss crowd might be onto something, though. Give players a chance to swing back.
Until then, there’s a director on record saying he can’t tell you yet whether Chadley becomes more powerful than Sephiroth, and a fanbase that would very much like a straight answer.
