The Pixel 11’s ‘glow’ feature is actually called HiLight, and it lives on the back

Google’s last real hardware change to the Pixel was a ring of magnets. This year it’s a light.

The glowing dot from Google’s Pixel 11 teasers has been floating around as “Pixel Glow,” which sounded like something a marketing team would fight for. The actual name, going by a fresh leak, is HiLight. Less interesting. Probably more accurate.

Roland Quandt of WinFuture posted the evidence on Bluesky: a look at the new LED sitting inside the camera module of the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. This isn’t the shadowy outline Google has been teasing. It’s the body of the device, and it doesn’t look quite like the last Pixel Fold.

The flash and the notification light are the same part now

The camera bump on the Pixel 11 Pro Fold is smaller, and the separate section for the flash off to the right is gone. HiLight appears to be the flash.

Presumably it still does flashlight and camera flash duty. The difference is that it can also produce a range of colors.

What Google says it does

The leaked graphic carries text in French. Translated, it reads:

Stay informed without looking at your screen

When your smartphone is turned upside down, HiLight discreetly illuminates when your favorite contacts call you or when you chat with Gemini.

So part of this is the notification LED, back from the dead. You’ll be able to set HiLight to alert you when certain contacts call.

Whether that extends to messages and other app-based notifications isn’t clear. Classic notification LEDs handled all of it. With HiLight, all bets are off.

We used to have this, and it was on the right side of the phone

Before displays swallowed the entire face of a phone, a small RGB LED was standard issue on Android hardware. It lit up for pending notifications or incoming calls, and it saved power in an era when waking the display too often would kill your battery.

HiLight is on the back. Which means it’s only useful with the phone face down, and plenty of people instinctively refuse to put a phone face down because they don’t want to scratch the screen. Maybe Google has an answer in the form of new, harder glass. Maybe you’re just expected to change a habit you formed for a good reason.

The Gemini tie-in is the part that connects to everything else

The other pitch for HiLight is Gemini, and that lines up neatly with the rest of Google’s hardware plans.

The first Googlebook laptops are expected in the coming months from various manufacturers, and they’ll all carry something called the Glowbar. Google has stayed vague about what it does. Based on HiLight, the bar lighting up when you’re talking to or otherwise interacting with Gemini is a safe bet.

The new Google Home Speaker already works this way. It has an illuminated ring around the bottom that lights up when you’re talking to Gemini and changes colors to represent status. HiLight probably does much the same thing on a phone.

Set your expectations at ‘magnets’

In 2025, the headline hardware change on a Pixel was the addition of Qi2 magnets, which Google sells as Pixel Snap. Useful, unglamorous, and hard to argue with.

A Gemini-focused notification LED on the back of the phone is arguably less important than that. It’s a light you can only see when you can’t see the screen.

Google’s reveal lands August 12. The thing worth listening for is whether anyone on stage says the words “app notifications.” If the demo is all favorite contacts and Gemini chats, that’s the whole feature.
