Your phone dies in a parking garage. The car is right there. The key fob is on your kitchen counter, because why would you carry it anymore.
That’s the scenario people picture when they hear about digital car keys, and it’s the one that’s least likely to actually strand you. The failure modes worth worrying about are duller and more mundane than a dead battery.
Digital car keys let you lock and unlock your vehicle from your phone instead of fumbling with a physical key or even a key fob. They work on Android and iOS, and Samsung has its own digital key technology that works with select vehicles. On compatible phones and cars, you use Google Wallet or Apple Wallet to lock and unlock, and with some cars, to start the engine too.
The standard isn’t new. It’s built around criteria set by the Car Connectivity Consortium, which devised the digital key spec back in 2018. Eight years of iteration means the basics are solid. The edges are where things get interesting.
The theft math is better than you think
Here’s the part that surprised me: digital keys are structurally safer than the fob sitting in your pocket right now.
Key fobs are vulnerable to relay attacks, where a thief amplifies the fob’s signal to unlock the car without ever touching the fob. Your fob stays on the hall table. The car drives away.
Digital keys don’t work that way. They use ultra-wideband (UWB) or near-field communication (NFC) to talk to the vehicle, so the car won’t unlock unless your phone is genuinely nearby. Distance is enforced, not estimated.
But immune isn’t the right word. If someone steals your phone and gets into it, they might be able to get into your vehicle. Most car makers layer on additional authorization to stop thieves, or your underage kids, from getting access.
What to actually do about a stolen phone
The defense here is the same boring hygiene that protects everything else on your device: two-factor authentication, strong passwords and remote wipe capability if it’s lost or stolen.
There may also be an option to use a second device to suspend the digital key while you hunt for your phone. On iPhone, marking the device as lost is enough. Apple CarKey locks the app down automatically.
That’s a meaningful difference from a lost fob, which just sits wherever it landed, fully functional, waiting for whoever picks it up.
The dead battery problem mostly isn’t one
Back to the parking garage. Not being able to hail an Uber or call home is bad enough. Being locked out of your own car on top of that would be worse.
It doesn’t work like that. Just as most key fobs hide a physical key or a backup way to start the car when the fob battery dies, digital keys have failsafes. With both Apple and Android, many keys and cards keep working up to five hours after your device battery dies, drawing reserve power through NFC.
Five hours is enough to get home. It isn’t enough to leave your phone dead overnight and expect the car to cooperate in the morning.
The failures that are more likely than you’d guess
People worry that Bluetooth or NFC will stop working. That’s unlikely.
Software is the softer target. It’s slightly more probable that the app crashes, freezes or demands an update at the worst possible time. Anyone who’s had a banking app insist on a forced update at a checkout counter knows the feeling.
The company's cloud server could also go offline, though most big companies run backup servers for exactly that reason. None of these scenarios are common. Knowing they’re possible changes how you plan around them.
Keep the fob anyway
Wallets went digital. Door locks went digital. Car keys are going the same direction, and the convenience is real, including how easily you can share access with someone else.
A backup is still worth having. Carry the key fob, or leave it somewhere safe at home where someone can bring it to you in an emergency.
Keep the phone charged, keep the app updated, and digital keys will be easy as pie. Things can go wrong with any digital technology. With the right precautions and a backup plan, you’ll use your digital car keys daily without issue.
