In Brief:

  • The Sandbox (official site) has launched The Sandbox Studio Beta, expanding access after months of restricted alpha testing.
  • The beta includes improved engine performance, new content packs, and enhanced creator support.
  • A dedicated Game Jam with a prize pool of $7,500 is now live, challenging creators to develop projects based on the theme “Overgrown.”

The Sandbox Studio Beta launches

The Sandbox Studio Beta is now available, broadening its creator base after a limited alpha release that permitted only 30 creators. The update features significant advancements in engine performance, content offerings, and support mechanisms.

Engine improvements include a lighter and faster setup, with new packs on the way that cover templates, assets, and skills. The beta also expands creator participation, adding more seats and launching a dedicated Game Jam. Sign-ups are available at sandbox.game.

From alpha restrictions to wider access

Limited access during the alpha phase attracted over 12,000 applicants, but the admission rate barely met demand. Selected creators brought expertise from platforms like Roblox and Unity, providing insights based on extensive industry experience. This beta release opens the doors for previously rejected applicants, greatly increasing potential participation.

Supporting these new creators is a robust framework that replaces informal guidance with tutorials, structured documentation, and a ticketing system to enhance scalability.

Game Jam incentives and themes

The new beta includes a Game Jam that started on August 12, 2026, featuring an overall prize pool of $7,500. The competition awards top entries $2,500 for first place, $1,600 for second, and $1,000 for third, alongside six special category prizes of $400 each. Participants must register for beta access to enter, even if they previously applied for the alpha.

Larry Hryb, known as Major Nelson from Xbox, is serving as the lead judge. The prize pool exceeds that of the previous Game Jam in the alpha, which was set at $5,000.

Understanding The Sandbox

The Sandbox, built on Ethereum and Polygon, functions as a metaverse where players create, own, and monetize voxel experiences. It operates on Windows and Mac, supporting NFTs while using SAND as the governance and utility token and LAND as the NFT representing virtual plots.

Studio aims to democratize content creation, enabling users without specialized technical skills to produce standalone games. Key features include an intuitive editor, starter templates, and the AI assistant Agent Nova. Future updates will prioritize multiplayer functions and deeper integration of the AI assistant.

Currently, there are 166,464 LAND NFTs owned by over 20,000 individuals. As Studio progresses, the platform plans to enhance utility for LAND owners, allowing them to curate and monetize games from others while maintaining a permanent presence for published works.

Long-term impact

The Sandbox has established itself as a leading name in the sector, consistently earning accolades such as fifth in the 2024 Game of the Year and multiple top placements in the Blockchain Game Awards. It ranks 26th on PlayToEarn with a substantial score of 970, reflecting its ongoing influence in the gaming ecosystem.
