Nintendo has never remade the original Legend of Zelda. Forty years on, a fan did it in Dreams, on a PlayStation 4.

That’s the detail buried under everything else Nintendo dropped during its Zelda-dedicated Direct, and it’s the one worth your afternoon.

The Direct was stuffed. New projects in the works, fresh details on ones already announced, a clear picture of what the coming year holds. There’s a whole Nintendo Switch 2 themed after the series. There’s Ocarina of Time gameplay. And tucked between those two headliners, almost easy to miss, a remake of the 1986 NES game got a lengthy gameplay showcase.

New visuals, gameplay tweaks, the works. It might be one of the best Zelda remakes yet. There are caveats, and we’ll get to them.

Nintendo skipped the one game that needed it most

It’s baffling, when you sit with it. There have been reimaginings. Oracle of Seasons started life as a remake of the original before development stalled and it pivoted into its own game. But Nintendo has never rebuilt the 1986 original in full for a modern console.

Which stings harder given what it is remaking. Ocarina of Time came out 12 years after the NES game and still largely holds up. That one’s getting the treatment. The one that invented the whole thing isn’t.

So the job fell to fans with time to spare and real affection for Nintendo’s back catalog.

The unexpected part isn’t the remake. It’s the engine.

Every Zelda fan remaster seems to run through Unreal Engine 5 these days. User Relevant-ish went a different way and built the whole thing in Dreams.

For anyone who missed it: Dreams is a PlayStation 4 title that hands players the tools to make their own games. It’s produced some wildly ambitious stuff, including a full Avatar: The Last Airbender game, and it got early traction precisely because of what people managed to build inside it.

So here’s the upshot. You can play the original Legend of Zelda, with revamped visuals, on a non-Nintendo platform. That was supposed to be impossible.

The visuals borrow from Link’s Awakening, and it shows

Gameplay surfaced on the YouTube channel Dreams Content, timed to land just before Nintendo revealed official Ocarina of Time remake footage. Good instincts. It built buzz for the fan project and fed the anniversary at the same time.

The look leans heavily on the Link’s Awakening remake, though every asset was made inside the Dreams engine. The footage runs Link through the overworld, into a dungeon, and up to the moment he gets his sword.

It’s the kind of thing you watch twice.

Now the catch

Dreams projects are capped on space. So the remake is split across multiple separate projects, and you can’t play it as one continuous experience.

Roam the overworld in one. Clear a dungeon in another. Same visuals, same gameplay, but you’re hopping in and out to get the full thing.

A shame, sure. Also just how Dreams works.

It’s free, and Nintendo hasn’t killed it

The lawyers have stayed home on this one, which is not a sentence you get to write often about a Nintendo fan project. No takedown. Nothing.

Anyone with a copy of Dreams can play it for free. Open Dreams, find the project, download it. That’s the whole process.

Watching fans pour this much work into recreating a game that genuinely needs a remake is its own kind of pleasure. Here’s hoping somebody in Kyoto is watching the footage and reaching for a green light on the 40-year-old game.
