Warner Bros. wants you back in a cinema seat with a wand-shaped popcorn bucket, and this time there’s actual bait for the people who’ve already watched all eight films a dozen times.
The studio is marking 25 years since the first Harry Potter movie with a run it’s calling “Back to Hogwarts,” and the pitch is simple. Every film. Back on the big screen. One week.
The whole series, back to back
From Aug. 27 through Sept. 3, all eight films return to theaters worldwide, playing back-to-back for anyone who wants to do the full marathon or just pick off a favorite.
That’s the kind of thing studios trot out for a big anniversary and hope nostalgia does the rest. Here, though, there’s a real reason to show up for the first one.
The catch is in the opening film
Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone won’t just be the version you already own. Warner Bros. says the first film will include new footage that hasn’t been seen before, running roughly 12 minutes.
Twelve minutes is not a throwaway extra. That’s a full scene’s worth of material folded into a movie people have practically memorized, which is the part that turns a routine re-release into something worth the ticket.
What we don’t know yet
The rest of the franchise also screens globally across that same Aug. 27 to Sept. 3 window. Warner Bros. is calling it a “global premiere.”
But “worldwide” is doing some heavy lifting. It’s not clear yet whether those exact dates apply to the Greek market, so if that’s where you are, don’t lock in the marathon plans just yet.
When you can grab tickets
Pre-sale starts July 31, at least for certain markets. Which markets, and whether yours is one of them, is the question everyone’s going to be refreshing their local cinema’s site to answer.
Twenty-five years, eight films, and a dozen minutes of footage that’s been sitting in a vault somewhere this whole time. If you were ever going to sit through the entire thing in a theater again, this is the version to do it with.
