R-Rated Batman: Knightfall Part 1 Becomes A Streaming Hit One Day After Release

Bane blows up Arkham Asylum, and the criminals he lets loose start grinding Bruce Wayne down to nothing. That’s the story Warner Bros. just put on digital storefronts. It took about 24 hours for people to notice.

Batman: Knightfall Part 1 hit home release on August 25, 2026. By August 26, it was the Number 3 movie on Apple TV’s VOD charts.

That’s fast for an animated film with no theatrical run behind it, and it says something about how badly readers wanted this particular story on screen.

The comic arc that finally got its movie

“Knightfall” ran in DC Comics in the 1990s and has stayed one of the most praised Batman arcs ever written. Bruce gets pushed past his absolute limit. The consequences are disastrous, and they stick around in the comics for years afterward.

This is the first adaptation of that arc, and the film covers the first third of it. Part 1 of a trilogy, in other words, with the worst still ahead.

Warner Bros. announced the project at New York Comic Con in October 2025. The anticipation has been building since.

An R rating that isn’t just for show

R-rated Batman movies are a short list. The others are animated too, either standalone or part of the DC Animated Movie Universe.

What the rating buys here is faithfulness. The movie tracks Bruce’s mounting burnout as he chases down escaped criminal after escaped criminal, with Bane’s plan sitting in the background the whole time, waiting.

Batman movies tend to work no matter the format. Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy pulled $2.46 billion worldwide against a combined $585 million budget. The Batman in 2022 spun off an entire shared universe, including HBO’s The Penguin miniseries and The Batman Part II.

When it lands on HBO Max is still a question

Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed a streaming date. Right now you can rent or buy it digitally, and the physical release comes September 8, 2026.

Going by how long other animated DC movies take to reach HBO Max, three months from initial release is a reasonable guess. That puts it at the end of the year, or January 2027 if the studio wants to dodge the holidays.

Whatever the date, the digital numbers are already a preview. One day out, and Bane’s demolition job is doing the kind of business that makes a Part 2 look like a very good idea.
