Amazon just dropped a Batman game into the world for free, and the catch isn’t a catch so much as a shrug: you play it on your phone.
Batman: Caped Crusader Chronicles puts you alongside the Caped Crusader working crimes across Gotham City, across 11 episodic cases stocked with the usual heavyweights. The Joker. Scarecrow. The developers promise “unique detective-themed minigames” playable with up to three friends.
The requirements are light. One player needs an Amazon Prime membership and a smartphone that can run Amazon Luna, Amazon’s cloud streaming service. That’s it. No console, no gaming PC, no controller sitting in a drawer somewhere.
It’s part of a bigger pile most people never find
The Batman game lands inside Luna’s GameNight, a collection of social party games. And GameNight is one corner of a service Amazon is clearly trying to shove into your line of sight.
Luna’s free lineup right now includes Dispatch, the choice-driven narrative superhero game, plus Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy and Jackbox Party Pack. Amazon admits most of its subscribers have no idea any of this is available to them.
So the company added a “Luna” tab to the Prime Video section to fix the discoverability problem. Whether that actually helps is another question. The tab is still buried enough that plenty of people will never stumble onto it, which stings a little when you consider what’s sitting there. Fallout 4. Alan Wake 2. Genuinely good games, streaming, waiting.
The show that prompted all this
The giveaway exists to mark season two of Amazon’s animated Batman series, the 1940s noir-flavored one. Let’s be clear about where it sits: it’s no Batman: The Animated Series. But the first season is pretty good.
Season two runs 10 episodes and hit July 31. It’s a mixed bag of nostalgia that only occasionally reaches the highs of its predecessor, which is the polite way of saying it doesn’t clear the bar it set for itself.
The Joker, though. The Joker is fantastic in it.
That might be reason enough to watch, and if you’re watching anyway, the free game is right there waiting on your phone with no barrier beyond a Prime login you already pay for.
