Take-Two Interactive’s search for whoever is behind the recent GTA 6 leaks is “rapidly evolving,” the publisher says in newly revealed court documents.
That’s the company’s own language, from its own filing. Not a rumor. Not an insider claim. A legal document.
The new filing isn’t like the last one
After the initial leaks, Take-Two moved fast on DMCA subpoena requests aimed at Discord and Microsoft. Those were broad. They cast an extremely wide net in terms of the information they sought, and that earlier request remains available to the public.
The new one is a different animal. It’s far more specific, seeking “targeted information” tied to the previous subpoena and to individual Discord users. And Take-Two wants it sealed, so the leakers don’t get a free look at the case being built against them.
“Take-Two has identified one additional Discord user and obtained additional identifying information for a previously identified Discord user, as well as additional information concerning the community servers identified in its prior subpoena for which it now seeks more targeted information,” reads the new request.
Why the publisher wants the paperwork hidden
Take-Two says the subpoena attachment “reveals highly sensitive, confidential information about an ongoing investigation into copyright infringement and the misappropriation of Take-Two’s confidential information.”
The reasoning gets blunter from there.
“Public disclosure of this information could compromise Take-Two’s ongoing investigation and even tip off the alleged infringers as to the nature and progress of Take-Two’s investigation and information Take-Two has gathered about the infringement,” Take-Two writes.
In a footnote, the company adds that its investigation “is rapidly evolving and ongoing,” and that the new subpoena request “seeks different information” than the first one.
Discord said it hadn’t been served yet
Worth flagging: Discord’s marketing director, Ryan Rigney, said as recently as August 25 that the company had yet to be served a subpoena from Take-Two. That may or may not have shaped the language in the latest request.
Either way, nothing has actually been granted. The court has yet to rule on Take-Two’s request for a sealed subpoena, and no new subpoena has been issued so far.
Two weeks in, and the net is tightening
The GTA 6 leaks have only been circulating for a couple of weeks, which makes the pace here notable. The scope appears to be narrowing from broad server-wide sweeps to specific people potentially involved.
If you had anything to do with the leaks, that shift is the part that should make you sweat.
And a small palate cleanser from the game itself: GTA 6 became too realistic for even Rockstar, so the devs cut a system for restocking Jason and Lucia’s fridge in order to “find the right balance between realism and ease of play.”
