Bad news if your GTA 6 plan involved a Game Pass subscription and nothing else: Grand Theft Auto VI won’t be part of Xbox Game Pass at launch. PC players are in the same boat.
So if you were hoping to skip a $600 gaming console and let a monthly sub carry you into Los Santos, that door’s closed.
The game is a few months out. Pre-orders are $80. If you haven’t put money down yet, what are you waiting for?
Later, maybe. Soon, probably not.
Will GTA 6 show up in the Game Pass library eventually? Probably. Previous GTA games have been included in the subscription, so there’s precedent.
But “eventually” is doing a lot of work in that sentence. It could be awhile.
And there’s a wrinkle worth knowing about: Xbox Game Pass is going to impose strict monthly limits on cloud gaming in November, which is the same month GTA 6 is released.
What you actually get for $22.99 a month
Game Pass is a monthly subscription that bundles online console multiplayer with a library of titles. The selection is genuinely deep depending on your plan. The $22.99 per month Game Pass Ultimate tier includes more than 500 titles, plus a selection of launch-day games, and it doesn’t require an Xbox console.
Not every game lands there, though. Plenty of popular titles do get added at some point. Usually not from day one.
Take-Two’s CEO explained the thinking years ago
Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of GTA developer Rockstar Games’ parent company Take-Two, laid out the company’s position on subscription services during a GamesIndustry.biz live event in 2022.
“We’ve supported various subscription services and we’re happy to do so,” Zelnick said at the time. “Our scepticism has been around making frontline console products available day and date with subscription. That doesn’t make any sense to us, because economically speaking, we don’t think consumers are prepared to pay for that. And we can’t afford to turn our business upside down in a way that doesn’t make sense economically. There always has to be an intersection between what the consumer wants and what the publisher is able to do. And you know, it doesn’t make sense to do that for our properties.”
That’s not a maybe. That’s a publisher telling you the math doesn’t work.
GTA 5 is the case study, and it’s not encouraging
Grand Theft Auto V has been included in Xbox Game Pass numerous times over the years. It was on the service in 2020, 2021, 2023 and 2025, usually sticking around for a few months before being pulled.
Its most recent stint ended on April 15, 2026.
Here’s the part that should temper your expectations. GTA 5 came out in 2013, and its first appearance on Game Pass came more than six and a half years later.
Does that mean a nearly seven-year wait for GTA 6? We just don’t know.
What’s certain is the near term. If you want to play GTA 6 when it launches later this year, you’re buying it outright and playing on an Xbox or PlayStation console.
