Shōgun is done shooting. The second season of the FX hit finished production this week, and co-creator Justin Marks announced it by pointing a camera at a room with nothing in it.
“The stages started empty, and now they’re empty again. That’s a wrap on Shōgun Season 2. Almost 200 days of tatami, palanquins, and fine lacquerware in the can. Wait until you see what’s coming…” Marks said on X.
Almost 200 days. Sit with that number for a second.
The story jumps a decade
Season 2 picks up 10 years after the events of the first season, which is the kind of gap that lets a show rebuild itself without pretending the last one didn’t happen.
Hiroyuki Sanada is back as Yoshii Toranaga. Cosmo Jarvis returns alongside him.
They’re not the only ones. Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno and Yuka Kouri all return as well, which keeps most of the bench intact heading into the time jump.
Eleven new names on the call sheet
The ensemble grows, too. Asami Kizukawa joins as Aya, Masataka Kubota as Hyūga, Sho Kaneta as Hidenobu, Takaaki Enoki as Lord Ito and Jun Kunimura as Gōda.
Rounding out the additions are Risei Kukihara as Gabriel, Ryô Satô as Rin, Seishiro Nishida as Jōshin, Mantaro Koichi as Saitō, Takashi Yamaguchi as Kanō and Rick Kumazawa, of Grey’s Anatomy and You, as Gaspar.
That’s 11 new faces walking into a world the first season spent its entire run establishing.
What Marks isn’t saying
He’s being coy, and he knows it. “That’s a wrap for the second season of Shōgun. Wait until you see what’s coming…” Marks wrote.
No plot details. No footage beyond the wrap post. Just a co-creator who spent the better part of a year on those stages telling you to be patient.
A release date for the second season of Shōgun hasn’t been announced.
For now there’s only the empty stage, and the tatami, palanquins and fine lacquerware packed away somewhere off frame.
