A fan-made Unreal Engine 5 version of Ocarina of Time is running in 8K right now, and the comment section under it is a war zone.
That’s the odd position Nintendo’s remake finds itself in before anyone has played a second of it. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is back in the cultural conversation almost 30 years after the original shipped, and Nintendo's announcement that a full remake is coming was a genuinely big moment. What they’ve cooked up, and how much of the original’s magic survives the trip, is the open question.
Because we know close to nothing. A quick look at the visuals in the initial teaser is the whole of it. Nintendo is almost certainly holding a specific Direct to open the game up properly for a reveal.
The fans got there first
Over on YouTube, there’s the Digital Dreams channel, which regularly showcases older games with updated visuals, often rendered inside Unreal Engine 5 at resolutions of 8K. Their latest is Ocarina of Time, shown off in 8K with updated lighting and visuals across many major areas.
It looks modern. It also loses a certain amount of the initial charm in the move to the new engine, which is exactly where the argument started. Commenters split on whether the whole exercise was worthwhile, and on whether this is the approach Nintendo will take.
The comments don’t hold back
“I really dislike the lighting. Everything is either too bright or too dark,” one comment read.
Another was more measured but no kinder: “Of course, it looks very good compared to the OG Ocarina of Time, but it’s no way near awesome [enough] for an Unreal Engine 5 game.”
A third didn’t bother softening it. “I hate to be a hater and i wear no nostalgia glasses, but this ain’t it. And it’s so so so far from what it should be that it’s pointless to even start typing why it ain’t it. Sorry.”
Nintendo’s turn is coming fast
The official Ocarina of Time remake is set to release later this year, which puts a full reveal roughly six weeks out at the time of writing. That’s not much runway.
And the fan base has already shown you what it does when a version of Hyrule doesn’t clear the bar. Expectations here are going to be very high indeed.
