Velocity’s Series A now sits at $48M, with Visa, Circle and Ripple writing checks

A London payments startup just got Visa, Circle and Ripple to fund the same round, and none of them expect you to ever notice the product.

Velocity pulled in another $10 million from that group, pushing a Series A that was already closed to $48 million total. Haun Ventures, Translink Capital and Mirana Ventures came in on the extension too. The original $38 million round landed in July and was oversubscribed, CEO Eric Queathem said.

The extension values the company at $200 million post-money, Queathem said in an interview.

Here’s what makes the cap table interesting. Visa put money into a stablecoin company that explicitly isn’t trying to kill cards.

Visa is funding the plumbing, not a card replacement

Velocity’s pitch is that blockchain-based money sits underneath the payment experiences people already use, handling funding and settlement in the background. Cards stay. The rails behind them change.

“Stablecoins are playing an increasingly important role in reshaping how value moves across the Visa ecosystem,” Rubail Birwadker, Visa’s global head of growth products and strategic partnerships, said in a statement. Velocity, he added, is building infrastructure to bring “stablecoin-powered money movement to every business.”

Chief Growth Officer Matt Larson was blunter about what this doesn’t mean for regular people.

“It probably doesn’t lead to all of us switching to have stablecoin wallets as users,” Larson said. What moves instead, he said, is “all of the funding, all of the settlement” circulating around card networks.

The back end nobody spent 15 years fixing

Queathem came from Worldpay, which settles more than $2 trillion in annual payments volume. That job is where the idea came from, and his read on the industry is unsentimental.

“All this capital has flowed into payments over the last 15 years, and it’s been 100% focused on how do you create a better experience on the front end for consumers,” Queathem said.

“But no one has fixed the back-end layer.”

You’ve felt the front-end half of that. Tapping a phone at a register is instant. The money behind that tap still crawls between issuers, card networks, acquirers and merchants on systems that are, in Queathem’s telling, cumbersome.

What the platform actually does

Velocity sells settlement, liquidity and treasury operations to payment companies and banks, built so they can use stablecoins without tearing out the systems already running. That last part is the whole commercial argument. Banks don’t rip and replace.

It’s a narrow, unglamorous slice of the market. It’s also the slice a $2 trillion-volume veteran would pick.

Stablecoins passed $300 billion and stopped being a trader tool

Stablecoins, cryptocurrencies tied to fiat money, were mostly a way for traders to shuffle dollars between exchanges. Circulation has since grown beyond $300 billion, and the use cases now include payments, cross-border transfers and corporate treasury operations.

That shift is the reason financial heavyweights are pushing deeper into blockchain-based payments infrastructure, and the reason a $200 million valuation on a company selling settlement pipes isn’t absurd.

The five-year bet, stated plainly

Queathem thinks corporate money is headed onchain, and he isn’t hedging about it.

“I think in five years every global business is going to hold value onchain,” he said.

Take that seriously and the interesting problem isn’t conversion. Moving dollars in and out of stablecoins is the easy part. Even a relatively small shift of corporate money onchain creates a much larger infrastructure challenge than that, Queathem said, because reconciliation and treasury management have to connect blockchain-based assets to financial systems that already exist.

That’s the gap Velocity is selling into, and it’s why Queathem expects demand for the connective work rather than the swap itself.

Watch whether the strategics become customers

Strategic money from Visa, Circle and Ripple buys a company distribution conversations, not revenue. The number worth tracking isn’t the $48 million or the $200 million valuation. It’s whether any of those three moves real settlement volume across Velocity’s platform, because a payments infrastructure startup with famous investors and no throughput is just a well-funded demo.
