Illuvium ties Hyper bonuses back to class in Arena 1.18.3

In Brief:

• Illuvium released Arena 1.18.3, making Hyper scale differently for Fighter, Bulwark, Empath/Psion and Rogue.
• Earth Hyper now grants physical resistance and Air grants energy resistance, while Bulwark grants maximum health. Composites are capped at three and composite chips are gone.
• The change reverses a call the studio made in update 1.8.0, when it stripped class-specific Hyper bonuses in favor of a single shared effect.

Illuvium pushed Arena 1.18.3 live, restoring class-specific scaling to Hyper roughly a year after the studio removed it.

Fighter, Bulwark, Empath/Psion and Rogue each scale differently under the new build, Illuvium said in the release announcement. Earth Hyper feeds physical resistance. Air feeds energy resistance. Bulwark feeds maximum health.

The patch also caps composites at three and removes composite chips outright.

What the reversal undoes

Update 1.8.0 cut class-specific Hyper bonuses and replaced them with one effect applied across the board. That patch also rebuilt synergies so primary synergies empowered all allies while composite synergies granted special abilities.

Hyper fills when an Illuvial fights an enemy whose affinity it counters, which makes it a positioning mechanic rather than a flat damage multiplier. Flattening the payoff in 1.8.0 meant a Hyper Bulwark and a Hyper Psion got the same reward for winning the same matchup.

The simplification pass, partly walked back

Composites have been a repeated target. In 1.3.2, Illuvium moved complexity out of base synergies and into composites, doubling their power for a more end-game-oriented impact. Update 1.9.0 then tuned down Behemoth and Templar after both became near-automatic Imprint picks.

Update 1.17.0.t went further, removing the max threshold effect from composite affinities and classes and setting synergy thresholds at 2/3/4/5 across all primary affinities and classes. The stated goal was simplicity and a sharper rock-paper-scissors dynamic. That same patch tied Hyper directly into synergy design, aligning synergy bonuses with the affinity counter relationships Hyper already rewarded.

The composite cap in 1.18.3 continues that trimming. The Hyper change doesn’t.

Cadence and context

Illuvium has been shipping Arena builds quickly. Updates 1.17.11 and 1.17.12 landed Aug. 3, 2026, followed by 1.18 on Aug. 26 and 1.18.1 on Sept. 1.

The point releases arrive while the studio works under tightened finances. Co-founder Kieran Warwick confirmed in August 2026 that the team cut wages to extend runway past August 2027.

ILV rallied 20.26% on Sept. 13 to $3.73, with about $15.3 million in 24-hour volume and a market cap near $30.9 million. Illuvium plans a December launch for the Overworld MMO.

Arena itself runs on Ethereum with most transactions, including NFT minting and trading, processed on Immutable X.

Illuvium’s own framing of the Hyper change was blunt: “Hyper finally carries class identity.”
