Rockstar’s follow-up to Grand Theft Auto 6 is already in full production. It just isn’t being made at Rockstar.
The studio’s next published release after GTA 6’s confirmed November 19, 2026 launch is Remedy Entertainment’s Max Payne 1 & 2 Remake. Remedy is rebuilding both original games as a single title for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on its in-house Northlight engine, and Rockstar is paying for it. Rockstar also handles publishing and distribution.
Why the remake is the safe bet
Remedy lists the project as in development, and it entered full production in 2024. There’s no release date yet, which means nobody can say with 100% certainty that Max Payne lands before anything else with Rockstar’s name on it.
But look at the alternatives. A fully fledged Grand Theft Auto or Red Dead Redemption entry takes years, and neither an internally developed GTA sequel nor a Red Dead sequel is on the slate. That makes the Max Payne remake more than likely the next Rockstar-branded release to ship.
What happens to GTA 6 after launch
The other place Rockstar’s resources will almost certainly go is post-launch support for GTA 6. What that support looks like for players is unclear, and details remain scarce.
Rockstar currently describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience. It hasn’t officially announced or detailed a new GTA Online component, though a new online mode is all but officially confirmed to be on the horizon.
The precedent is worth keeping in mind. Rockstar treats online GTA as a separate product, and GTA Online is sold as a standalone title on current-generation consoles. The same will probably happen for GTA 6, which would mean the game most people are waiting for and the game Rockstar’s servers run on for the next decade could end up as two different boxes.
