In Brief:
- DogeOS launched its public testnet on September 30, allowing developers to create applications with EVM compatibility on Dogecoin.
- Built as a zero knowledge rollup, the network aims to enhance transaction speeds while preserving the integrity of the Dogecoin base layer.
- Notable applications in development include DeFi platforms and gaming titles, marking a significant expansion for the Dogecoin ecosystem.
DogeOS testnet launches for developers
DogeOS has opened its public testnet, enabling developers to build EVM-compatible applications on Dogecoin. The Chikyū testnet went live September 30, supporting trading, lending, gaming, and consumer apps in advance of an undated mainnet launch.
The initiative comes from the team behind the MyDoge wallet, aiming to introduce smart contract functionality without altering the Dogecoin blockchain. Timothy Stebbing, director at the Dogecoin Foundation, endorsed the project, stating it provides “smart-contract functionality one layer above the Dogecoin network while preserving the simplicity of its base ledger.”
Technical overview
DogeOS operates as a zero knowledge rollup that settles on the Dogecoin base layer. It bundles transactions and backs them with proofs linking to the original chain, targeting around 300 transactions per second compared to approximately 30 on Dogecoin itself. DOGE serves as the gas token, with no separate network token introduced.
Currently, the testnet utilizes a permissioned sequencer, validators, and a trusted execution environment. A proposed Dogecoin upgrade, OP_CHECKZKP, planned for July 2025, could allow miners to verify zero knowledge proofs directly.
Developer-friendly environment
DogeOS’s EVM compatibility allows developers to use familiar tools such as Hardhat, Foundry, EthersJS, and Remix. This lowers the barrier for teams already active on Ethereum or other EVM chains to migrate their contracts over without learning new languages or toolchains. The launch includes features like a bridge, a testnet faucet, and an L2Scan block explorer.
Applications in development
A range of applications is already being developed on the testnet. In DeFi, Barkswap provides liquidity, Superposition Finance manages lending, Derps offers perpetual futures, and Split Markets focuses on options. In gaming, titles like Doge Escape, Doxx Arcade, and PlaysOut PLAY $0.02959 ▼ -6.9% are in the pipeline. Players can utilize DOGE for in-game actions without the need for token bridging.
The official Dogecoin account acknowledged the launch as “a huge milestone for Dogecoin,” encouraging builders to engage.
Leadership and funding
Jordan Jefferson leads DogeOS, having co-founded MyDoge, one of the most popular Dogecoin wallets. The project raised $6.9 million in May 2025, led by Polychain Capital. As of the testnet launch, DOGE traded around $0.0958, with a market capitalization of approximately $14.95 billion.
Implications for the Dogecoin community
DogeOS addresses the limitation of Dogecoin’s original design, which was not built for smart contracts. Traditionally, using DOGE in DeFi or gaming meant wrapping it on other chains, adding complexity and risk.
By keeping the core layer simple and facilitating application logic above it, DogeOS allows holders to engage in the ecosystem using the asset they already possess. The project’s success will depend on the testnet’s performance and the transition of its security model beyond the current permissioned framework.
Potential impact on web3 gaming
For game developers, DogeOS presents an opportunity to access a large community with limited on-chain gaming options. The familiar EVM tools can expedite the porting of existing contracts for in-game items, rewards, and marketplaces, while players avoid the learning curve associated with new tokens. Early titles such as Doge Escape and Doxx Arcade will test the waters for Dogecoin’s casual, meme-driven community to engage with on-chain gaming.
