OpenAI is rolling out GPT-6 to ChatGPT, and it’s going to every tier, including Free. But free users and paying subscribers won’t get the same GPT-6, and that difference is worth knowing before you decide whether your subscription is still worth it.
The biggest change isn’t raw intelligence. It’s what the answers look like. GPT-6 ships with a capability OpenAI calls Intelligent UI, which the company said lets the model return responses quickly with fully interactive user interfaces built right into the chat.
Your answers may come with buttons now
OpenAI trained GPT-6 to be better at everyday conversations and to put together more visual responses inside the chatbot itself. Depending on what you ask, a reply could include graphics, tappable buttons, forms, charts and other interactive elements.
OpenAI’s own example is a dinner party. Ask ChatGPT to help you plan one, and the response could include an interactive table showing how much of each ingredient to buy based on the number of guests you say are coming. It could also add checklists and follow-up forms you fill out to get more detailed help.
And the model isn’t supposed to force any of this on you. If plain text makes more sense for the question, OpenAI said GPT-6 can decide to skip the visuals entirely. That restraint is the part to watch. A chatbot that turns every simple question into a dashboard would get old fast.
It starts answering before it’s done thinking
The less flashy change may matter more day to day. Reasoning models typically settle on their output before you see anything, which is why complex requests can leave you staring at a loading indicator.
OpenAI gave GPT-6 the ability to answer while it’s still thinking. The company trained the model to build its response across multiple messages, with each one adding useful information so the final result holds together as a whole. The goal is shorter wait times on complex tasks. Whether those staggered messages feel coherent or fragmented in practice is the obvious open question.
Calculators, bill splitters and Snake
OpenAI said the interactive responses could make complex topics easier to understand with visual aids. You can also use the feature to build small tools for specific needs, like a calculator to help you weigh investments or figure out how to split a bill.
And yes, you can use it to recreate retro games like Snake inside ChatGPT. That’s a fun demo, though a bill splitter is the more convincing case for everyday use.
“Instead of fitting every question into the same conversational format, ChatGPT can combine UI, data, and actions to create entirely new ways for people to explore, understand, and interact with information,” OpenAI said.
Sol for subscribers, Luna for everyone else
Here’s the catch. GPT-6 with Intelligent UI has already started rolling out worldwide to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users, and on those plans it runs on GPT-6 Sol.
Free and low-cost Go accounts are expected to get access sometime today. Those tiers will run on GPT-6 Luna, which OpenAI said isn’t as capable as Sol.
So “GPT-6 for everyone” comes with an asterisk. If you’re on Free or Go, try the interactive features on something practical, like the dinner party planner or the bill splitter, before you assume you need to upgrade. If Luna handles what you use ChatGPT for, Sol is a premium you might not need to pay.
