The Sandbox pivots to AI tools

The Sandbox is gearing up for the public launch of its AI-driven Sandbox Studio, which it has spent nearly three years developing. CEO Robby Yung indicated a provisional rollout is planned for October during a recent appearance on the Blockchain Gaming World podcast.

Unlike the original Game Maker, which focused on no-code tools for beginners, Sandbox Studio is tailored for developers experienced with platforms like Unity and Unreal. Yung noted, “If you were an actual game developer, then those tools actually acted as a constraint.”

Empowering smaller teams

The new tools aim to streamline processes by automating repetitive tasks such as debugging and content updates. Yung believes this shift could support teams of various sizes, suggesting that serious studios might not need more than 30 employees, while smaller teams could develop games that once required much larger resources.

In a strategic shift, the studio will allow developers to export games to various platforms, including mobile app stores and Steam. This marks a departure from The Sandbox’s original focus on its own virtual ecosystem, as Yung argued, “Nobody is going to make a living in The Sandbox today.”

A broader vision

The potential for cross-platform distribution means a game could achieve viability by reaching audiences on multiple platforms, even if a niche title draws only 5,000 players per channel. While The Sandbox will remain a publishing destination with its signature voxel art style, Yung envisions it as a city within a larger metaverse, not a comprehensive environment.

The company has already engaged about 30 established creators in an alpha game jam for Sandbox Studio, with plans to expand the beta program further ahead of the planned public release.

Ultimately, Yung emphasized that the goal of Sandbox Studio isn’t to automate game creation, but to equip experienced developers with the tools they need to craft quality games. “The goal here is not to automate game creation,” he said. “Because that’s how you get AI slop.”
