If you bought Aliens: Fireteam Elite on Nintendo Switch, your copy is gone. Not unplayable online. Gone.
Cold Iron Studios shut down the servers for the cloud version of the game on Switch, following through on an announcement it made back in March. The base game cost $30. The “Ultimate” version, which came with additional content, cost $60.
Nobody is getting that money back. Cold Iron Studios hasn’t offered customers refunds.
The consolation prize costs money
Affected players are reportedly entitled to a discount on the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game. Read that again. The compensation for losing a game you paid for is a price break on buying the same game a second time.
Aliens: Fireteam Elite is a 2021 co-op third-person shooter set in the Alien film franchise. It’s still available as a physical copy and as a download on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, and as a download on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The Switch version was cloud-only, which is exactly why it died first.
The goodbye message was very polite
Cold Iron Studios told players in March, via a pop-up inside the game itself, that the end was coming. The publisher reportedly wrote:
“Thank you for playing our game. We sincerely appreciate your support. The game will be accessible until August 5, 2026, 23:59 JST. After that, you will no longer be able to access the game. We apologize to our loyal customers for any inconvenience this may cause, and we appreciate your understanding. We hope you will continue to enjoy our other game titles.”
With the game delisted, the people who paid can’t play at all. Not online with friends. Not alone, offline, in a room by themselves.
Check the calendar
The shutdown lands weeks before Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 arrives on August 25. Killing the Switch version of the original could push some people to buy the sequel. Make of that timing what you will.
Cold Iron Studios hasn’t revealed how many copies the game sold on Switch. Between the physical PlayStation release and the downloads on four other consoles, the cloud-only Switch version was probably the least appealing way to play, and the studio may well have looked at the numbers and decided the audience was too small to justify the server costs.
Your library is a rental agreement
This keeps happening, across platforms, year after year. And digital downloads aren’t immune either. It’s rare, but buying a digital copy only gets you a license to play the game, and a license can be revoked. If the store you bought from loses the rights to distribute the title, that’s your problem now.
The disappearing-library problem is why the announcement that PlayStation games won’t get physical discs as of January 2028 caused such an uproar. Fewer discs means fewer games you can actually hold.
Shutdowns like this one have produced lawsuits before. Those lawsuits failed. What they did accomplish was making a lot of people understand that the word “buy” on a storefront button is doing a great deal of work.
August 5, 2026, 23:59 JST. That was the deadline, and it passed, and somewhere a Switch owner is staring at a $60 icon that opens to nothing.
