Diablo 3 Is Still the Best Diablo, 14 Years On, and I’m Not Budging

There’s a correct opinion to hold in Diablo circles, and it’s Diablo 2. Not circles of hell. The community around Blizzard’s dark fantasy action RPGs, where the 2000 game is treated as settled law: moodiest, most unforgiving, still impressive in scale, unbeatable longevity, and it plays well today, especially in the Resurrected remaster.

You can go purist and argue for the first Diablo, but that’s a first draft and nobody honestly believes it’s the better game. Diablo 4 is too current and too popular to be cool to like, so the move there is complaining about the latest balance changes or endgame tweaks.

Which leaves Diablo 3 sitting in a strange reputational limbo.

The stink of 2012 never fully washed off

It got hammered before launch for a more colorful, less grungy art style. Then hammered at launch for network problems, a real-money auction house and tuning that felt wrong. Blizzard eventually pulled it out of the fire with the Reaper of Souls expansion in 2014 and console ports that actually understood the assignment.

But the early days left a residue. And the game isn’t old enough yet, or its sequel is too new, for a proper reclamation movement to build any steam.

Quietly, though, people keep playing it. They’re having a great time. I’ve loved it since launch, problems and all. It's on Xbox Game Pass right now, and if a newcomer asked me where to start, I’d point them here over Diablo 4.

The least hardcore Diablo, and that’s the point

Yes, part of my case is that this is the most welcoming, most rewarding, least hardcore entry in the series and by far the easiest to get into. It doesn’t carry the stern old-school design of 2 or the live-service bloat that 4 was always going to accumulate.

It feels trim. Contained, even. Which is a ridiculous thing to say about a game with essentially limitless content that has been running for 14 years and was actively updated for 11 of them.

For all its roots in computer RPGs, Diablo 3 has an arcade streak that cuts straight through the stat math and tells you what’s good about it immediately. Best gamefeel in the series. Most refined combat, no contest. Positioning matters, tactical crowd control matters, and you have to keep moving to grab health drops because you get one health potion and it’s on a cooldown.

Moment to moment, it’s just more fun to play.

Your build should serve your loot, not the other way around

You can sink as deep into itemization and progression as you like. But here’s the part some action-RPG fans can’t forgive: the game resists min-maxing and theorycrafting because its builds are so fluid.

Skills and skill-altering runes don’t live in trees with tangled interdependencies. They’re not buried in crafting systems. You swap them around with almost total freedom.

So I don’t play toward a build and bend my gear to fit it. I adapt the build to whatever drops, which means my character is perpetually changing how it plays. Heresy to a certain kind of ARPG player. To me it’s refreshing every single time.

The tuning helps. Every class, skill and rune has been fine-tuned by Blizzard, who remain the best to ever do it. The pyrotechnic Wizard is still the most thrilling glass-cannon class in Diablo history, and the game is full of flavorful twists on classic archetypes, particularly the Monk, Crusader and Demon Hunter.

The campaign is camp, and I’m fine with that

The story is probably the weakest thing here. I’ve also never understood people who play these games for the plot.

What I’ll say is that it’s soaked, especially in the voice acting, in a vigorous, broad, high-fantasy camp that most Diablo fans find grating. Bring the right frame of mind and it’s entertaining. Zoltun Kulle, the ghostly mage who tags along for a stretch, chews scenery like it owes him money.

Beat the campaign and Adventure Mode opens up: a surreal endless remix of everything in the game, scattering Bounty missions across the world map and building toward runs of the wildly randomized Nephalem Rift dungeons. Context-free monster massacre with character progression on an exponential curve.

Four people, one couch, infinite demons

Now the caveat, and it stings: this next part applies only to the console version, not PC.

Diablo 3 is one of the greatest local co-op games ever made. Up to four friends, drop-in and drop-out with zero fuss, and a user interface that gets out of the way. It asks almost nothing of a team beyond company while you all revel in the mayhem.

The rhythm is what sells it. Bursts of savage monster-killing, then chatty downtime while everyone sorts loot and tinkers with builds. Then back in.

Diablo 3 is about as uncool as Diablo gets, and I’ll defend it forever. I’m not the only one. There are dozens of us.

Maybe Blizzard’s retrospective gaze eventually lands on us and decides we need a new class or a new expansion. Or maybe we tell them not to bother. Diablo 3 doesn’t need it.
