Skyweaver

What is Skyweaver?

Skyweaver is a free-to-play digital trading card game that runs in a browser on phone, tablet and PC, from Horizon Blockchain Games. It has drawn unusually strong reviews for the category — NFT Plazas compared its arrival to Hearthstone's in 2014 and called it a genre-defining digital TCG, and Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian described it as reviving the fun of childhood collectible card games with the trading actually intact. Its own framing is simple: battle, win, own, trade.

How to play Skyweaver

Matches are deeply strategic but the ruleset is designed to be picked up quickly, and the game is genuinely free to start — you can play, win and earn cards without spending anything. Cards won in competitive play become yours to keep, gift or sell, and a player-owned marketplace sits alongside the game where they change hands. Because it is browser-based and cross-platform, there is no install step and no platform lock: the same account plays on a phone during a commute and a desktop at home. The card pool and its interactions are the depth here — the game is built for players who want to solve a board rather than execute a rotation.

What makes Skyweaver different

Digital card games have spent a decade taking ownership away from players: cards are licences, collections evaporate when a service shuts down, and a rare pull cannot be sold. Skyweaver's whole argument is that the cards are yours in the way physical cards were — earned through play, tradable at will, and not gated behind a paywall to acquire. That it manages this while remaining free to play, and while reviewers rate the gameplay on its own merits rather than as a crypto curiosity, is what sets it apart in the category.

Our verdict on Skyweaver

Skyweaver is a free-to-play digital trading card game from the studio behind the Sequence wallet, previously known as Horizon Blockchain Games. It runs in a browser and on mobile, uses an email-based account rather than a wallet extension, and holds its cards as tokens on Polygon. In 2025 the studio folded the Horizon brand into Sequence and moved its focus to blockchain infrastructure, so the game is maintained and playable rather than actively expanding.

The economy is the genuinely unusual part: the studio sells no cards at all. Base cards unlock through experience and cannot be traded; Silver and Gold cards come only from weekly ranked leaderboards and from Conquest, a single-elimination run that ends at three wins or one loss, entered with a Silver card or a key costing about $1.50 USDC. All three grades are mechanically identical, so money buys appearance and liquidity, never a stronger deck.

The drawbacks follow from that design. Trading happens only in an in-house market priced in USDC, there is no token, and cards cannot leave for outside marketplaces, so their value depends entirely on how many people still play — and content arrives slowly now.

It suits strategy players who want a ladder they can climb without buying packs, and will frustrate anyone chasing tradable assets or earnings.

This is our own editorial assessment. We do not score games — ratings come from players.
