Vulcan’s Battle Chess
What is Vulcan’s Battle Chess?
Vulcan’s Battle Chess is a 3D chess game built by Vulcan Forged, the studio behind the VulcanVerse fantasy setting and the Elysium blockchain. Rather than reinventing the rules, it wraps standard chess in the ecosystem’s art direction: the pieces are Vulcanites, the collectible creatures used across Vulcan Forged’s other titles, and captures play out as short character animations instead of a piece simply leaving the board. The game runs in the browser as a WebGL build, and there is a free-to-play version, so a wallet or NFT purchase is not required to start a match.
How to play Vulcan’s Battle Chess
Play happens directly in a desktop browser at the official client, chess.vulcanforged.com, which is also reachable from the Vulcan Forged website’s gameplay section. Because it is a WebGL build, mobile browsers are not supported. Matches can be played against AI opponents or against other players online, and a Speed Chess mode adds a clock for faster games. Underlying play is ordinary chess — the familiar openings, tactics and endgames all apply — so the learning curve is about the ecosystem layer, not the board. Players who own Vulcanites can bring those characters onto the board; the same Vulcanites are usable in other Vulcan Forged games rather than being locked to chess.
Vulcan’s Battle Chess tokenomics & earning
The title sits inside Vulcan Forged’s two-token model on Elysium. PYR is the ecosystem’s primary token, used for staking, marketplace activity and governance, while LAVA is the in-game play-to-earn currency. Winning matches and beating the clock awards XP, and rewards are tied to endorsed Vulcanite characters rather than paid out simply for playing. Earning potential is therefore modest and tied to owning ecosystem NFTs; the free version is best treated as a chess client with cosmetic and progression extras attached.

Our verdict on Vulcan’s Battle Chess
Vulcan's Battle Chess is exactly what the name suggests and not much more: standard chess rendered in 3D, with Vulcan Forged's Vulcanite creatures standing in for the usual pieces and short combat animations replacing a captured piece simply sliding off the board. It runs as a WebGL build in a desktop browser, against AI or other players, with a timed Speed Chess mode. Crucially, the rules are untouched, so every opening and endgame a player already knows transfers directly.
That restraint is its strongest quality. Chess needs no balancing pass, so the game sidesteps the half-finished feel common to ecosystem side-titles, and the free version works without a wallet. The weaknesses are structural rather than fixable: the WebGL client rules out mobile entirely, which is where most casual chess now happens; the capture animations that give it character also slow the pace of a game many people want moving quickly; and the earning layer is thin, since XP and LAVA rewards attach to endorsed Vulcanite NFTs rather than to play itself.
It suits existing Vulcanite holders looking for another use for characters they already own, and casual players curious about the setting. Anyone after serious competitive play, or serious returns, should look elsewhere.
