Lucia is flat on a bench, pushing a bar up and back down. It’s a few seconds of the GTA 6 Extended Look, and it’s the first real hint of how the game might handle exercise. If you played San Andreas, you already know where this is likely headed.
Everything points to San Andreas’ gym and weight system coming back in Grand Theft Auto 6. Treat that as a reasonable reading of the footage so far, since Rockstar Games hasn’t laid out the full system. In that version, how you treat Jason and Lucia shapes their bodies. Feed them badly, skip the gym or deny them sleep and they may not reach their full potential. Keep them disciplined and they stay in shape.
Three stats, and only one is on screen
Food and exercise look like two of the system’s three building blocks. The bench press is the only exercise anyone has seen. Treadmills, weightlifting and rowing could all be in the gym too, but that’s a guess, and the full list won’t be known until the game launches, currently dated for November 19, 2026.
Exercise outside the gym is speculation as well. Swimming, running and wrestling could plausibly feed the same stats. CJ got fit in San Andreas by running and cycling, so it’d make sense for Jason and Lucia to do the same.
Sleep is the likely third stat, and it could bite. Go without it and your character might aim worse or see a blurry screen. GTA 6 is possibly locked at 30 FPS on console, and a blurry screen in the middle of a mission at 30 frames a second sounds miserable.
Don’t expect quick results either. A playthrough could run past 80 hours, which could easily mean months of in-game time. One trip to the gym probably won’t do much. You’d have to keep going, much like real life.
Too many sandwiches, and the jeans stop fitting
The San Andreas logic probably carries over. Eat too much or stop training altogether and Jason and Lucia can put on weight.
Extra weight could show up in their clothes. If that’s how it works, you may want to keep a spare outfit or two in a car trunk, using the trunk storage feature reported for GTA 6.
Training should pay off. It could tone muscles, bulk your character up and let them eat more without gaining as much weight. Bigger health bars could follow from that. All of this is speculation and can’t be confirmed until the game is out.
Sleep could help or hurt
A well-rested protagonist might pick up a small stat buff. Plenty of games hand out temporary boosts for sleeping a set number of hours, and Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar’s own game, is one of them. Sleep may also tie into the weight system, affecting how fit your characters are and how well they function.
Short on sleep, Jason and Lucia could get tired and work out less effectively, which would make staying fit harder. There’s a trick for dodging police car chases that could get them back to a safehouse faster for some rest.
It’s just as possible that sleep loss only makes them look tired and leaves the gameplay alone. Money drives GTA 6’s story, and managing sleep deprivation (yours or theirs) wouldn’t be much fun. Rockstar may still add penalties for staying awake too long. Nobody knows yet.
Two bodies to look after
Yes, depending on how you use the system, you can change Jason’s and Lucia’s body types.
They’re separate characters, so one could hit the gym while the other scouts a heist location. Or you could feel lazy and book a ride on the in-game Ryde Me taxi app instead of walking. All of that will likely count toward fitness.
So if you stick with one protagonist too long, the other could get out of shape. You can call Jason or Lucia to meet up and train together as a couple, which could help both their fitness and their relationship.
How big, how ripped, nobody knows
There’s no information on how muscular or how heavy either character can get. Rockstar Games hasn’t released the full details of the weight system.
It’s also unclear whether you can push toward a specific body type by repeating the same habits over and over.
Say Jason eats 10 Prairie Sandwich Box Meals in one sitting. Does he balloon, or does he refuse the next one once he’s full? Unknown.
What has been reported is that GTA 6’s map is around two times bigger than GTA 5’s and RDR 2’s. Jason could probably walk off the 300,000 calories eventually.
Will weight change how it plays?
Weight will change how Jason and Lucia look. Whether it changes how they play is still open.
San Andreas tied weight to CJ’s stats. Carry too much and he lost stamina faster. In better shape, he could run for longer.
Rockstar adding body-based stats to GTA 6 for realism wouldn’t be a stretch. The game reportedly has a Criminal Profile that changes based on what Lucia and Jason do, so the weight system could react to your choices in the same way.
So you’ll have to pick: buff Lucia or buff Jason?
