Matt Selman said one word at D23, and it sounded a lot like damage control.
Asked about the chances of a sequel to the cult classic The Simpsons: Hit & Run, series creator Matt Groening said, “I think the original game is coming back in some form.” Current showrunner Selman jumped in with “or not.”
Watch the exchange and the tone in both voices, plus the body language, points the same direction. Groening appears to have let something slip that he wasn’t cleared to say.
The game is genuinely hard to play right now
The original came out in 2003 for PlayStation 2, Xbox, GameCube and Windows. Getting it running on a modern computer is doable. Getting it running on a modern console isn’t.
It’s not in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. It’s not on the Xbox backward compatibility list. That absence is the whole reason a comment like Groening’s registers at all, because there’s a real gap for something to fill.
A straight port is the boring version
The simplest read of “coming back in some form” is a direct port dropped into one of those catalogs. That would work. It would also be the least interesting outcome.
A full HD remaster is the version worth wanting. And the cost math on that is friendlier than it looks, because nobody needs to rerecord the voice acting. The original cast nailed it the first time.
What to actually do with this
Don’t preorder anything. There’s no announcement here, no date, no platform list, just a creator’s stray sentence and a showrunner’s fast correction.
The cult classic is long overdue for an HD remaster. Until someone confirms one, your best route is still the PC one. Alright, mindless drones, return to your ugly families.
