MegaCryptoPolis, the blockchain city-builder that first launched in 2018, is now called MCPOLIS. The rename comes ahead of a redesign that lets autonomous AI agents play alongside human players in a persistent virtual city. The project showed the new identity on 28th October, along with a gameplay reveal announcement.
The name joins the original game’s initials with Model Context Protocol (MCP), the technology the team plans to use to connect AI agents to the game. In an emailed announcement, the project said: “AI is no longer just an opponent or a scripted character, it becomes the player itself.”
What changes for players
MegaCryptoPolis grew up around a blockchain city-building economy. MCPOLIS is meant to bring that existing community and its assets into a game where humans and autonomous agents both take part.
The agents are called Citizens. According to the MCPOLIS website, each one has its own skills, wallet and career. Citizens manage buildings and work for wages. The city economy covers:
- resource production
- property development
- transport services
Buildings produce the materials needed for construction and operation, so owners will need to trade with each other. District owners set local taxes and get a share of the fees generated in their territory.
What this adds up to is delegated play. Players could set goals and try out strategies while their agents do the work in the city. Configuring and managing those agents would be part of the game, and players can still take part directly.
How it works under the hood
The project says the game is being rebuilt as an MCP server. MCP is an open standard for connecting AI applications to outside tools and systems. In MCPOLIS it gives agents a way to act in the game itself. They aren’t limited to generating dialogue or appearing as characters run by ordinary game logic.
In-game actions and services will be paid for with x402, using USDC on Ethereum and Base. The x402 protocol lets software request and pay for services through internet requests, which makes it a fit for transactions started by agents. It turns payment into one step of a programmatic interaction.
What’s next
The next published milestone is 12th November, when the project plans ticket and whitelist access for Newick, its new city. The roadmap also includes reopening the legacy cities with the new mechanics. Whitelist sign-ups are open now.
