For more than a decade, Netflix put movies in theaters and refused to say what happened next. That ends now. The company will start publicly reporting its box office revenue.

The six films that start the clockWhy the split mattersThe end of guessing

It’s a small policy shift with a lot of history behind it. Netflix has been sending films to theaters for years without officially reporting how they performed commercially. Anyone who wanted numbers had to go looking for them elsewhere.

Until this change, earnings for Netflix films were only known through independent sources. The company treated theatrical runs as something closer to paperwork, a prerequisite for eligibility at the major award ceremonies rather than a business worth discussing out loud.

The six films that start the clock

The rollout begins with a specific slate: La Bola Negra, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, The Mosquito Bowl and Ink.

All six hit theaters before they arrive on the platform.

They aren’t getting identical treatment. The first three titles receive a wider and more extended theatrical window. The remaining films follow a more limited release strategy.

Why the split matters

That two-tier approach tells you something. A wider window for La Bola Negra, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew and Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory means Netflix is willing to let those three sit in theaters long enough for the numbers to mean something.

The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, The Mosquito Bowl and Ink get the narrower path. Same theatrical requirement, different scale.

The end of guessing

The practical effect is that the guesswork goes away. No more piecing together estimates from outside trackers to figure out whether a Netflix theatrical run did anything at all.

Netflix is choosing to put the figures on the table itself, for the first time in more than 10 years of doing this.

Six titles. Two release strategies. And, at last, numbers the company is willing to attach its name to.
