Nintendo doesn’t usually tip its hand. So when a corporate statement about The Legend of Zelda‘s future starts circulating, it’s worth reading twice.
The franchise is turning 40 this year, and Nintendo is marking it with more than a commemorative art book. Ocarina of Time is coming back as a remake later this year. The movie is on track for April 2027. And there’s still no confirmation of the next mainline single-player game, which somehow makes the whole thing feel busier, not quieter.
Then came the statement.
The quote everyone’s parsing
Over on Twitter/X, user Stealth shared a statement from Nintendo laying out the company’s plans. It reads like it was drafted by a committee, because it was, but there’s something real underneath the varnish.
“A live-action movie of The Legend of Zelda is planned for release in 2027. Going forward, we will take a variety of approaches to continually create contact points with Nintendo characters all over the world, working to convey the appeal of Nintendo’s entertainment offerings to an even wider audience.”
“Contact points” isn’t a phrase anyone has come across before. Educated guess: Nintendo wants to introduce people to its characters in as many ways as possible, which likely signals the company is doubling down on adaptations to other mediums.
Why this matters more than it sounds
Nintendo wanting a bigger audience isn’t news. Every company wants that. What’s interesting is the willingness to stray further from a formula that’s worked for decades.
For a long stretch, Nintendo was the one big video game company that resisted sending its IPs to other mediums, for the most part. That resistance was the brand. Then the Mario movies arrived and the wall came down.
Zelda is next in the pipeline. And if the statement means what it appears to mean, similar projects are meant to follow.
The 2027 test
Everything hinges on how the movie lands. Nintendo’s language leaves plenty of room to retreat if it doesn’t, which is exactly how these statements are written.
But read it generously and it sounds like the opening move of a much larger plan for the company’s entire catalog of characters.
