Twenty years of silence, and Capcom moved a million copies of Onimusha: Way of the Sword before the first day was over.

That’s worldwide, day one, for a series that hadn’t gotten a true new entry since the early 2000s. Capcom announced the number Monday, September 7.

The number behind the number

The launch did something else for Capcom’s books. On the back of the new game’s performance, the Onimusha series has now passed 10 million lifetime sales since its 2001 debut.

Way of the Sword came out September 4, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

Capcom didn’t leave this one to nostalgia

The company credits a long promotional runway. Multiple demos went out ahead of release, and Capcom ran hands-on presentations at various events.

The goal was two-sided: remind the people who played the originals that the series still exists, and pull in players who’ve never touched an Onimusha game in their lives. Judging by the day-one figure, both halves landed.

Musashi in Edo-period Kyoto

If you’ve been out of the loop, the setup is straightforward. Way of the Sword is set in Edo-period Kyoto, and the protagonist is Miyamoto Musashi.

Combat is built around fast swordplay and the supernatural Oni powers the series has always run on. No reinvention. Just the thing people missed, brought back with modern hardware behind it.

The part Capcom slipped into the press release

The sales figure isn’t the most interesting thing here. It’s the sentence attached to it.

Capcom said that alongside its major annual releases, it plans to keep reviving legacy IPs that have sat dormant for years, drawing on its catalog of classic franchises.

Capcom owns a lot of dormant franchises. And it just watched one of them sell a million copies in 24 hours.
