Our ranking#2

Pixels has its own page in our games catalog, and you can compare it with every other title in our ranked list of crypto games.

What you earn and how: Pixels is free-to-play with optional purchases, and its lite paper calls it a play-to-earn game. The game uses two currencies: off-chain Coins and the on-chain PIXEL token, and the game now runs on Ronin. Players earn Coins through gameplay and spend them on items, which lets them level skills faster. Quests also give item rewards. One example is the Rusty Watering Can for completing A Mysterious Man. Holders can stake PIXEL through the official site. The lite paper says owners of the genesis Farm Land NFTs get exclusive game mechanics and earning mechanisms. As of 2026-10-28, PIXEL traded at $0.004683, 99.5% below its all-time high.

How we researched this review

This is a research-based review, not a play log: nobody on our team claims hours in Pixels here. We read our catalog entry, 2 official pages, the whitepaper and docs, the official gameplay guides and store listings, 4 forum or blog pages, the public Discord and X channels, the official update history and news coverage, token market data, NFT market data, team, funding and audit records (read on 2026-10-28). Every price, count and size in this review carries the date of its own reading where the source gives one. Forum posts, community chats and docs pages often carry no date: those sources are undated, and each one is linked where we use it so you can check it yourself.

What is Pixels?

Pixels is a free-to-play farming and social MMO that runs in your web browser. It uses 16-bit pixel art. It launched in 2021 on Polygon and moved in September 2023 to Ronin, the Ethereum-linked chain built by Sky Mavis. Its PIXEL token also exists as an ERC-20 on Ethereum, which is why the game is listed under both networks.

You play at play.pixels.xyz and can sign up with an email address, so you don’t need a wallet to start. New players get a Speck, a small free public plot, where they plant, water and harvest crops. Every action costs energy that refills over time, and cooking, crafting, mining and woodcutting each have their own experience track. The early design took heavy inspiration from Stardew Valley and Runescape. The copyright line on the official site names Banger Inc.

Pixels was founded to solve play-to-earn, and it uses data analysis to aim rewards at genuine player contributions. What you own in Pixels can earn rewards backed on the blockchain, and staking PIXEL earns rewards and perks. Landowners can let visitors farm their plots in exchange for a share of the output.

Pixels says it has over 10 million players and is building a platform where users can make their own games around digital collectibles. Chapter 2 is out, and updates are planned every two weeks.

Gameplay experience

How a match plays

Pixels has no matches or rounds. You control one character in a persistent shared world drawn in 16-bit pixel art, and everything happens in real time.

Pixels gameplay screenshot 1, a casual crypto game on Ronin
Pixels gameplay screenshot.

The first routine is to plant seeds, water them and come back to harvest.

Modes

Progression and difficulty

Progress follows separate profession tracks in the RuneScape style, laid over a farming-sim routine. The design takes heavy inspiration from Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley.

The game uses two currencies: off-chain Coins and the on-chain PIXEL. Coins earned through play let you buy more items and level your skills faster.

Land ownership opens exclusive game mechanics and earning mechanisms that Speck players don’t get.

Controls and platforms

Pixels runs entirely in a web browser at play.pixels.xyz.

If you own a supported NFT, you can use it as your in-game avatar.

Getting started

Pixels is free to play. You open it in a web browser at play.pixels.xyz, and you don’t download a PC, Android or iOS client.

You can make an account with an email address, or connect a Ronin wallet through its mobile app or browser extension.

The free path gives you a character and a spot on a Speck, the free public plot. The paid side is optional: PIXEL buys VIP memberships, and Land NFTs on Ronin give you your own farm.

The first steps, in order: go to play.pixels.xyz, sign up with email or a Ronin wallet, create your character, then plant, water and harvest your first crops on the Speck.

The game doesn’t ask for deep crypto knowledge to get going.

Graphics, art and sound

Pixels has a light retro look that suits a browser game: farm plots, crops and animals in a cartoonish pixel style, built so you can play without knowing much about crypto. CoinGecko describes Pixels as a social platform that took a lot of inspiration from Stardew Valley and other MMOs, and the Stardew Valley comparison fits its farming-sim presentation.

Art style and world

The Pixels world mixes farming, exploration and community building in one open map on Ronin. You manage crops and raise animals on your land, and the energy from each harvest is what you spend to expand it.

Pixels’ 10 Million Pixels art, dated August 8, 2026, uses a sparser style: chunky pixel blocks on a near-black, dark green background, mostly in red, green, yellow, white and grey, with small magenta and cyan dots. When the view zooms far out, long, thin, jagged lines of pixels form large shapes, including white line drawings of an eye symbol, a winged disc and a fish-like figure.

Characters and animation

Your character levels up through separate professions. Pets have arrived, and players can win one as a companion.

Interface and menus

Pixels runs entirely in a web browser at play.pixels.xyz, and you can sign up with an email address instead of a wallet. Connecting a Ronin wallet goes through the mobile app or a browser extension.

Economy and earning reality

Pixels is free to start, but its economy is tied to a token that traded at $0.004632 on October 29, 2026. Its all-time high was $1.02 on March 10, 2024. For anyone holding PIXEL, each token is worth a small fraction of its 2024 peak price.

What you need to own to earn

Staking only works if you already hold PIXEL.

Most of the earning tools come with land. Farm Land holders get exclusive game mechanics and earning mechanisms, and they vote on proposals in proportion to how much they own. A free player can join the game, but the exclusive earning routes belong to landowners.

Token supply and market

As of October 28, 2026, 771,041,667 PIXEL were in circulation out of a maximum supply of 5 billion. Trading on that small base is busy. Volume over 24 hours was $4.6 million on the same date, which is more than the token’s whole market cap.

With fewer than two thousand holders, land and the other NFTs belong to a small group, and that group has access to the exclusive earning mechanics.

The promise against the price

Pixels built its play-to-earn pitch on the idea that early players who invest time become stakeholders and share in the rewards as the project grows. There is no official daily or per-season reward figure, so a free player has no published number to set against the time the game asks for.

The biggest risk for a PIXEL holder is the supply that hasn’t reached the market yet. As of October 28, 2026, PIXEL’s fully diluted value was $23.4 million, 6.5 times its market cap of $3.6 million. That gap means the tokens trading today are a small part of what will exist, because most of the supply is not yet circulating or is locked.

Only 15.4% of the maximum supply was circulating on that date. A holder’s share of the total gets smaller as those tokens enter circulation.

Pixels presents PIXEL as a sustainable token backed by the utility behind it, with no dependence on supply-side manipulation or a constant stream of new users.

Pixels’ NFTs are optional for playing, and ownership is narrow. Farm Land is the one collection with a real gameplay role, and only a small share of Pixels’ players hold an NFT.

A Farm Land plot gives you your own piece of virtual land and access to the core game mechanic, and you can invite others onto your farm to share in the rewards. Only the top 2000 point earners could mint Farm Land. Those points came from every action in a stripped-back early version of the game.

Pixels players don’t need an NFT to start, because new players get a free public plot.

Rounds as recorded in our funding database; each round links its page there.

Pixels has a public founder, Luke Barwikowski, and its funding rounds list their investors by name. Cointelegraph Magazine profiled Barwikowski and wrote that the idea for Pixels came to him after he quit a tech job in his early 20s to travel and work in New Zealand.

The seed round closed on February 3, 2022, raising $2.4 million from Animoca Brands, PKO Investments, OpenSea, Leonis Capital and Untapped Capital. Cointelegraph Magazine reported that Animoca Brands led that 2022 round and that the money came when the project was running close to the line, which turned things around for its founder.

The strategic round on February 9, 2024 raised $4.8 million, twice the seed amount. Its backers were Framework Ventures, Fenbushi Capital, Mechanism Capital, Collab+Currency, Volt Capital, IBC Ventures, Blocore, Sky Mavis and Yield Guild Games, with individual investors Alex Svanevik, Gabby Dizon and Aleksander Larsen. A gaming guild and the company behind Ronin both put money into that round, so Pixels’ chain partner is also one of its investors.

The move to Ronin came through an announcement on the Ronin blog that Pixels was migrating to the Ronin network, and the Ronin side said it would work with the Pixels team on the transition.

The lite paper sets out a plan of gradual decentralization: build game mechanics first, add blockchain backing to each one afterward, and treat a token drop as the end goal, because many projects drop their tokens too early. It also promises that community input goes directly into product and game decisions. That page was last updated 4 years ago, so its plan comes from before the token economy that runs the game today.

Pixels has its biggest audience on X and Discord, and its developers keep asking that audience to help build the game. As of October 29, 2026, the official X account @pixels_online had 311,200 followers. X has the larger following, and only a small share of Discord members are in the server at any one time.

Pixels community size as of 29 Oct 2026, read from the public channels.

The developers answer the community mainly by handing it tools. On July 27, 2026, the X account posted “The Pixels client is now open-source” and said developers could download the frontend, mod it and connect their own version to the sandbox SAND $0.04892 ▼ -9.4%. The same post listed the backend, creator tools, one-click hosting for forks and community voting as the next steps. On October 27, 2026, the account said a batch of UI and quality-of-life updates had gone live, some of them built by the community. The next day it asked followers “Should we add a speck version”.

Press coverage praises how easy the game is to pick up. NewsAboutNFT called Pixels a poster child of the casual NFT gaming revival and wrote that “Players can drop in for a few minutes, complete simple tasks, and accumulate items that can be sold or used across the broader Pixels ecosystem.” The outlet put the game’s appeal down to low-friction play and financial stakes that players can opt out of.

Roadmap and current status

Pixels is live on Ronin, and in 2026 it grew from one farming game into a platform. Players can mod its open client, vote on community builds, and see its rewards tech running in other titles. It logged 30 dated updates and news items in the 12 months to October 28, 2026, and it also cut staff this year. Pixels is #2 on our ranked list of crypto games as of October 28, 2026.

What shipped in the last year

Chapter 3, Bountyfall, arrived on October 31, 2025 and split players into three Unions (Wildgroves, Seedwrights and Reapers), as we reported.

On July 22, 2026 Pixels published its client code. Egamers.io reported that modded clients can’t touch the economy or game state and that the server code is still to come. The first community builds went live on October 6, 2026. Votes on them count by PIXEL and Land NFT holdings, so landowners and large holders have the most say. A large quality-of-life update landed on October 27, 2026.

Pixel Dungeons, Chubkins and the wider studio

Stacked, the studio’s AI rewards platform, opened to outside studios on March 27, 2026. Our report found it live in Pixels, Pixel Dungeons and the early access title Chubkins. On August 10, 2026 Ronin said Pixels was entering its next chapter but gave no date. Egamers.io reported that founder Luke Barwikowski describes Pixels as a user-acquisition engine with five or six experimental games around it. On June 2, 2026 the company laid off staff, a day Barwikowski called “not the happiest day internally.”

Pixel Dungeons began in 2024 as the team’s first publishing deal with an outside studio, Crack and Stack, and its closed beta opened in December 2024, egamers.io reported.

The original Pixels roadmap put four goals in order: a utility token, a mass-market release with a mobile app, a second game mechanic and a governance token. PIXEL is that utility token. Holder voting is as close as Pixels has come to governance, and the backend is still waiting to be open-sourced.

Decrypt reviewed Pixels twice in 2024. In February 2024 it called Pixels a proper free-to-play game, and in September 2024 a different reviewer found it empty and repetitive.

Risks

The main risk in Pixels is its token, and items carry the same exposure. Players can complete simple tasks and collect items that can be sold or used across the Pixels ecosystem, so what those items are worth depends on a market that has been falling. Your risk drops if you play for free. NewsAboutNFT wrote that Pixels makes the financial stakes optional.

Pixels also depends on the chain it runs on. Pintu News, citing Decrypt, reported that the game was built on Polygon in 2021 and moved to Ronin in autumn 2023 because Ronin’s users were already used to Web3 games. The Ronin blog announced it would work with the Pixels team on that move, and today your wallet and assets sit on Ronin.

Pintu News names Luke Barwikowski as the developer of Pixels. Its beginner’s guide to Pixels has a section on the risks new players should understand.

Pixels alternatives

Comparable games on our ranked list: The Sandbox, Big Time and My Neighbor Alice. Pixels sits at #2. Each one’s page has its genre, chain, token and current status side by side with this one.

Verdict: is Pixels worth your time?

Pixels is worth your time if you want a free, slow farming MMO in your browser. It’s a poor pick if you want income from free play. You can sign up with an email address and farm a free plot without a wallet. The game changes often, with 30 dated updates and news items in the 12 months to October 28, 2026. If you play now, you’re playing a different game from the one at its 2024 peak.

The past year added a lot. Chapter 3, Bountyfall, arrived on October 31, 2025 with Unions: three teams, Wildgroves, Seedwrights and Reapers, that compete in events for rewards. Since August 18, 2026, players can build things, everyone can try them, and the community decides what becomes official. As we reported, the studio’s Stacked rewards platform runs in the main game, Pixel Dungeons and the early access title Chubkins.

Pixels draws on Stardew Valley and Runescape, and players who like those routines will get the most from it.

Who should skip it

Skip Pixels if earning is the point. As of October 28, 2026, PIXEL trades 99.5% below its all-time high, so holders from the peak have lost almost the whole value of their tokens. The game also publishes no reward rate for free players.

Free players also come second to landowners. Tier 5 launched on April 15, 2026, and egamers.io reported that its new industries only work on NFT Lands and need Slot Deeds that only those parcels have. On the community hub, egamers.io wrote that a vote’s weight depends on how many PIXEL tokens and Land NFTs the voter holds. The studio also cut staff in June 2026.

What would change the score

The score goes up if Ronin’s next Pixels chapter adds content free players can use. Ronin announced that chapter on August 10, 2026 with no date, feature list or chapter number, egamers.io reported. The score also goes up if the server code follows the client. As of July 22, 2026, egamers.io noted that custom clients can’t touch the economy or game state, and the server code had yet to be released. The score goes down if more industries move onto land only, if more decisions go to token-weighted votes, or if the June cuts are followed by more.
