Rockstar says the GTA 6 leaks were ‘heartbreaking for our team’ and the game is nearly done

Rockstar Games waited a week, then said the quiet part out loud: those gameplay clips floating around your feed are real.

In an official statement published ahead of its extended look at Grand Theft Auto VI, the publisher acknowledged for the first time that the leaked videos are legitimate. It called them “heartbreaking for our team” and warned they may contain some spoilers. “This is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time,” the statement said.

That’s an official Rockstar statement, not a report or a rumour. Which makes it the single most substantial thing the studio has said about GTA 6 in months.

The apology nobody expected

Rockstar apologized. Not for the leak, which wasn’t its doing, but for the silence that preceded it: for how long it’s taken to finish the game, to share official gameplay, to tell fans anything at all.

And then the line that will get screenshotted more than any other. Rockstar said it was nearly finished making the game. The parenthetical in its own statement is “(nearly there!)” which is the most emotionally legible Rockstar has ever been in a press release.

Worth flagging the obvious: a game that receives many updates over the coming years is never really finished. “Nearly there” means the box, not the roadmap.

What’s actually confirmed about the release

GTA 6 is slated to arrive on November 19. Rockstar repeated that date in its own statement, so treat it as the studio’s word rather than a retailer listing or an insider whisper.

The extended look streams first on Netflix on August 27, then lands on YouTube several hours later. Rockstar said prepping it took longer than it hoped, but that it knew it needed to exceed fans’ expectations.

More than a dozen clips, and a memecoin

An individual or group dumped more than a dozen gameplay clips that spread widely across social media. Rockstar issued takedown notices on many copies.

The first two showed Jason, one of the two playable protagonists, shooting a few hoops at his safe house and then causing chaos on the roads of the game’s version of South Florida. Later leaks depicted him at a nudist colony and cycling along an impressively crowded beach.

None of that has been described or confirmed by Rockstar. It’s leaked footage, full stop, and Rockstar’s only comment on its contents was the spoiler warning.

The leaker promoted a memecoin in the clips and claimed they were protesting video game companies’ alleged anti-consumer practices. The example cited: Rockstar’s decision to release the physical edition of GTA 6 as a code in a box instead of on a disc. One of the leaked clips notably showed Jason walking around a store that sells physical copies of games. Make of the coincidence what you will.

Take-Two is chasing paperwork

The publisher is said to have been “all hands on deck” figuring out how the leaks happened and who’s responsible. That characterization is an unverified report, not a company statement.

What’s on the record is narrower. Parent company Take-Two Interactive sought information from Microsoft and Discord that it believed to be connected to the leak. On Monday, Discord marketing director Ryan K. Rigney said the company had “not yet been served with a subpoena” and that once Take-Two had, it would “evaluate the validity and scope before responding.”

Rigney’s phrasing is doing a lot of work there. Nobody at Discord is refusing anything. Nobody is handing anything over either.

We know that many of you have been waiting to hear from us regarding the events of the past week. It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time. We are very sorry that everything has taken as long as it has, from getting the game finished (nearly there!) to sharing more details and official gameplay, and providing the community with everything you want to know.

We are very excited for everyone to see the extended look tomorrow. It has taken longer than we wanted to get it ready, but as with everything we do, we know we need to exceed your expectations, and we are determined to deliver at the level you expect and deserve. While it is unfortunate that the intended game experience may now be impacted by some spoilers, we hope that everyone will wait a bit longer to experience the game for themselves on November 19.

Strip away the gratitude and the statement is making one request: wait. Don’t watch the clips. Don’t read the threads. Let the thing land on November 19 the way it was built to land.
