Sony just announced a new controller. Fans responded by asking about disc drives.
The Icon Blue Special Edition DualSense controller arrives 25 September, with pre-orders opening 27 August. PlayStation Plus members get a two-day head start, on 25 August. It’s a two-tone blue thing, dressed in two different shades, and you’re not going to lose this one in a couch cushion. If blue’s your color, you already know whether you want it.
The comments went somewhere else entirely
Over on the PlayStation UK Twitter/X account, the replies turned into a referendum on physical media.
“Can I get a digital version? You hate physical, remember?,” one user asked. Another said, “It’s just disrespectful that you’ll sit here posting about a controller color, but won’t address discs.”
Others kept it to four words: “no disc, no buy.”
Why a controller color became a fight
Reports suggest the next generation of PlayStation consoles could launch as early as 2027, and the headline change Sony reportedly wants to make is the end of physical games. That’s the bittersweet part. A PlayStation 6 could usher in a new era of gaming while quietly closing the door on owning anything.
So when the company posts about a blue controller instead, people notice.
The PS5 era has been a lot
Rewind to the 2020 launch: stock shortages, scalpers everywhere, and the general nightmare of trying to buy anything during the COVID-19 pandemic. Sony has also taken criticism over the past six years for how thin the PS5 exclusive lineup has been.
That last part is changing. Sony announced that exclusives will stay genuinely exclusive, rather than turning up on PC not long after release.
The games have been the good news
Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Rise of Ronin all landed in this window, and there are plenty more. Sony clearly isn’t done with the PS5 either, hence a brand-new piece of hardware arriving in September for a console heading into its twilight.
Between now and whenever the PlayStation 6 shows up, Sony has a lot to prove. And right now the loudest voices in its mentions aren’t asking what color the controller is.
