A solo developer has spent seven years building a Zelda game nobody asked them to make. The trailer just showed up at F3 2026, and it’s darker than anything Nintendo has put out.
Glass of Fate is a direct sequel to both Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask. Not a spiritual successor, not a remix. A sequel, built from scratch in Godot, which means it’s an original project rather than a ROM hack or a mod layered over someone else’s code.
The new Link isn’t the one you remember
The game introduces an entirely new Link form: the Cursed Hero. What his curse involves, beyond the usual business of reincarnating forever to save the day, isn’t explained. The trailer keeps that close.
What it does show is a Hyrule in considerably worse shape than anything in the mainline releases. The tone is grim in a way the official games rarely commit to for long.
What F3 actually is
If you don’t follow the modding scene, F3 2026 is currently running. It’s an online event that works like a fair for free fan games, all shared through the Kaze Emanaur YouTube channel. Super Mario and Zelda dominate, but smaller projects turn up from across Zelda’s portfolio.
Glass of Fate stood out as one of the furthest along of anything at the event. Seven years will do that.
The developer hasn’t gone quiet during those years either. Regular updates, an active Discord, development timelapses posted as the work happened. That’s a level of communication most funded studios don’t manage.
Zelda turns 40 and the fans showed up first
The Legend of Zelda hits 40 this year, and Nintendo has been generous about giving people things to look forward to before the main anniversary event has even passed.
The Ocarina of Time Remake is the biggest of those. The N64 game returns on Switch 2 with an upgraded look and new features, and it should arrive in relatively short order this year.
There’s no confirmation yet on when Glass of Fate gets a full release. But while you wait, one Hyrule is being rebuilt by a company with 40 years of history behind it, and another is being rebuilt by one person with a Discord server and a lot of patience.
