Starshower doesn’t burn cities. She catches meteors.

That alone makes her the strangest addition to the Game of Thrones dragon roster in years, and she didn’t arrive on HBO. She arrived in a mobile game.

Starshower – The Wishkeeper is the latest dragon in Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, the 4X mobile strategy game from Warner Bros. Boston. Her whole deal is protection from the sky itself, described as “standing guard between the realm and the wrath of the skies.”

Which is a very different job description from Vhagar’s.

A dragon born from a meteor shower

Starshower was “first seen during a summer when the heavens turned restless,” per the game’s lore, during a meteor shower where “she circled watchfully above the countryside, each sweep of her wings scattering the meteors harmlessly into the distant sea.”

She’s not a conqueror. She’s a warning system with wings.

“Starshower is said to appear only when catastrophe looms from above—comets, omens, or worse—standing guard between the realm and the wrath of the skies.”

That framing puts her in odd company. Most dragons in this universe show up to end something. She shows up to prevent something.

How you actually get her

You unlock the Epic Sentinel through the Shadow of the Greens campaign, one of three main campaigns in the game.

Here’s the wrinkle. Sentinel dragons usually anchor the defensive side of a roster. Starshower specializes in Tactical damage instead.

So she’s a Sentinel who hits.

The Solar Flare loop

Her kit runs on marks. Starshower applies Solar Flare marks to enemy dragons, then repeatedly consumes those marks to trigger Tactical damage and hand defensive bonuses to allies.

Starfall Command does the setup work for you, automatically marking enemies the moment battle starts.

Ill Portents is the engine that keeps the whole thing running. It steadily raises her damage output, and if every mark has been consumed, it can reapply Solar Flare later in the fight.

Then there’s Night Guardian, which cleanses negative effects and grants Evade to allies. That’s the part that makes her worth a slot even in a team that already has damage covered.

An attacker who also fixes your problems. Rare thing.

The lineage she’s joining is enormous

George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood laid out a dragon bloodline spanning thousands of years of Targaryan history, and HBO has spent the past several years pulling those beasts onto screen through House of the Dragon.

Vhagar. Caraxes. Syrax. Meleys. Sunfyre. Vermithor. Silverwing. Dreamfyre. Fans finally got to see what those names actually look like.

And the show didn’t treat them as interchangeable set dressing. In both the books and the series, every dragon has its own appearance, personality and fighting style, each one built around a specific bond between rider and beast.

Vhagar’s size is the threat. Caraxes’ serpentine build is the threat. Meleys works on speed and elegance.

That’s a meaningful expansion of the franchise’s dragon lore, well past what the original Game of Thrones ever handed viewers.

None of it happens without the original three

Drogon, Rhaegal and Viserion did the heavy lifting first. Daenerys Targaryen’s trio is the reason any of these creatures capture imaginations on screen at all.

Everything since has been building on what they established.

And the roster keeps growing. New dragons are still being introduced to this universe, which is a genuinely odd sentence to write about a show that ended years ago.

Worth a download

Starshower is one of several unique dragons in Game of Thrones: Dragonfire, and the game is free on the App Store and Google Play.
