X Money Launches Nationwide for US Premium Subscribers With 6 Percent APY and a Visa Card

In Brief:

  • X Money launched nationwide on July 27 for US Premium and Premium+ subscribers, integrating banking features directly into the X app.
  • The service offers deposit accounts, a Visa debit card, and a competitive 6 percent APY, positioning it as a contender in consumer finance.
  • The rollout aims to enhance user engagement on X by keeping payments within its ecosystem, though regulatory scrutiny remains.

X Money expands nationwide

X Money began its national rollout on July 27, embedding financial services within the X app for US Premium and Premium+ subscribers. This move marks a significant shift as X positions itself in consumer banking, aligning with its broader ambition of becoming an everything app.

Initially available to a limited audience, the rollout targets creators, freelancers, and businesses already using X, allowing them to manage payments without leaving the platform. Users can expect features like instant money transfers between X handles, physical checks, and free ATM withdrawals.

Features of X Money

X Money functions as a comprehensive spending and saving account. It offers a yield of 6 percent APY on balances, which is notable given that most banks are currently offering rates closer to 4.5 percent. The accompanying X Card provides 3 percent cashback on eligible purchases and supports direct deposit that can arrive up to two days before payday.

However, analysts express caution regarding the sustainability of the high APY and cashback offerings, suggesting they may normalize over time to align with other fintech competitors.

Banking partnerships

X Money operates through a partnership with Cross River Bank, a New Jersey-based institution that provides FDIC insurance up to $250,000 per depositor. The service also features a cash sweep program that can extend this coverage to up to $10 million across different banking relationships, though certain conditions apply.

It is important to note that X itself does not hold a bank charter, and the deposit insurance only covers bank failures, not the risks associated with X’s operations.

Security measures and regulations

Security is a key marketing point for X Money. Accounts employ passkeys for authentication, with options for users to set custom transaction limits. Visa provides additional security features for card transactions.

X has acquired money transmitter licenses in 41 states and the District of Columbia, but the service is not yet live in New York and Massachusetts, pending approvals. The launch has attracted attention from lawmakers like Senator Elizabeth Warren, who are calling for closer oversight of such financial offerings.

Impact of the launch

X’s primary goal is boosting user adoption. With hundreds of millions of users on the platform, even a small conversion to depositors could solidify X Money as a viable player in the financial space. The integrated banking features represent the first real movement toward embedding financial products into the app.

Interestingly, the service currently operates exclusively with fiat currencies, launching without any cryptocurrency features despite earlier expectations for integration. While full availability for all US users is planned, only premium subscribers have access at present, with regulatory approvals still pending in key states.
