Here’s the pitch Microsoft is quietly running past its most loyal players this week: sit through some ads, then stream a game. A game you already paid for.

Affordability is the word Microsoft keeps reaching forThe cuts behind the pitch

On Thursday, Microsoft announced that select Xbox players will be able to stream select games after watching ads. The setup borrows straight from the ad-supported tiers you already know from Netflix, HBO Max and Prime Video. Watch the spots, get the access.

The test is small on purpose. It’s open only to members of the Xbox Insiders program, and it only covers games those players already own. There’s a one-hour session limit across supported devices.

Xbox is framing this as a favor, not a catch.

“The core game experience is unchanged,” the Xbox team wrote in a post on Xbox Wire, adding that “This is optional. Players can choose other ways to play at any time.”

The company keeps returning to one phrase. It says it’s running the test “with the player in mind.”

“Advertising has existed in gaming for decades, from in-game placements to free-to-play models,” Microsoft said in its announcement. “But it hasn’t always been built with the player in mind. When done well, advertising can help lower the cost of access. It creates another way for players to get into games without an upfront streaming purchase and expands audiences through new ways to play.”

The ads, the team says, “do not interrupt the flow of gameplay.” And it promises to “hold ads to the same quality bar as our content.”

“We’ll learn from this test and continue to improve it based on how players use it and what they tell us,” the Xbox team said. “Our goal is simple. Give more people more affordable ways to play.”

Affordability is the word Microsoft keeps reaching for

That word matters right now, because the hardware is getting a lot less affordable.

After raising Xbox Series X and S console prices in 2025, Microsoft has another big increase landing on Aug. 1. The standard Xbox Series X will soon cost $799.99. The cheapest model, an Xbox Series S with 512 GB of storage, will soon cost $499.99.

To soften the blow, Microsoft has been pushing financing and Buy Now, Pay Later plans. It has also floated the idea that used consoles are the most affordable way into the Xbox ecosystem. Buy someone else’s old box. That’s the value play.

The cuts behind the pitch

The ad experiment isn’t happening in a vacuum. Microsoft is making deep cuts across its Xbox division.

The company announced 3,200 layoffs in the games group over the course of the year, and it’s shedding at least four game studios in severe cost-cutting measures.

So the messaging lands a little strangely. Prices up. Studios gone. Thousands of jobs cut. And the affordable path Microsoft is offering is a Series S, ads before your own games, or somebody’s secondhand console.

Microsoft, for its part, insists the Xbox Series S remains one of the most affordable ways to play major franchises.
