Open the PS App on your phone right now. It’s yellow.
Not PlayStation blue, not the icon you’ve had parked on your home screen for years. Yellow, in the exact shade every Wolverine fan clocks instantly. Sony Interactive Entertainment flipped it to mark the launch of Marvel’s Wolverine, and if yours still looks normal, you need to update the app.
The catch: it’s temporary. The change is only expected to last a few weeks, so look at it while it’s there.
Sony doesn’t do this for everything
That’s what makes the yellow app worth a mention at all. Sony saves the PS App treatment for some of gaming’s biggest launches and skips the rest. Grand Theft Auto VI later this year is a safe bet for the same honor. Beyond that, nobody knows which upcoming releases get it.
The reason for the fuss is that Marvel’s Wolverine is a PlayStation exclusive, and it goes live today, 15 September, on PlayStation 5.
Insomniac hands Logan the claws
The game comes from Insomniac Games, the studio behind Marvel’s Spider-Man, and it’s an action-adventure built around the Marvel Comics character. It was officially announced back in 2021. Long time coming.
You follow James “Logan” Howlett, an amnesiac mutant who rejoins his former team to investigate a series of mutant abductions while trying to piece together his own shrouded past.
It’s a standalone entry in Insomniac’s Marvel franchise. The game “shares continuity” with the other entries, but you can play it cold without having touched them.
We gave it a 7/10, and the reason matters
Our review landed on seven out of 10, and the sticking point isn’t what Wolverine does wrong. It’s who he’s standing next to.
“It may be unfair, but it’s impossible to play Marvel’s Wolverine without comparing it to Insomniac’s previous Spider-Man games,” our review reads. “There’s nothing as pleasantly surprising here as in the first Marvel’s Spider-Man game, and while Marvel’s Wolverine still has an emotional edge, the gameplay and storytelling can’t really get out of Peter Parker’s shadow. Too many parts feel like a game I’ve already played before.”
And then the part that stings, because it’s affectionate rather than harsh.
“Marvel’s Wolverine is a fine game. Good, even. However, given Insomniac’s pedigree, I was expecting something a bit closer to greatness, which ultimately made this outing with Logan a bit of a disappointment. I’m cautiously optimistic about Wolverine’s future in Insomniac’s Marvel universe, even if this is an admirable – but flawed – first offering.”
Go make up your own mind
A seven is not a warning. It’s a studio getting compared to its own best work and coming up a step short, which is the kind of problem most developers would take.
So download the update, watch your app turn yellow, and decide about Logan yourself. The claws are out on PS5 today. The yellow icon won’t be there much longer.
