Matt Damon spent nearly three hours commanding the screen as Odysseus, and the follow-up isn’t Ocean’s 14. It isn’t the next Bourne, either.
It’s an untitled sci-fi movie from the Daniels, and Damon has described it as The Breakfast Club meets Inception.
That’s the pitch. That’s all you get for now, and honestly, that’s enough.
What The Odyssey did for him
Damon has been a fixture in Hollywood for decades. Multiple Oscar nominations as a performer, one Academy Award for writing Good Will Hunting. But nothing in that run compares to this moment.
After a string of supporting turns in Christopher Nolan movies, he got handed the lead in a fantasy action epic and turned Odysseus into something richer than a fearless tactical leader. It’s the reason he’s considered likely to land an Oscar nomination.
It’s also a big part of why the movie pulled $1.6 billion worldwide. The cast is stacked and Nolan sells tickets on his name alone, so Damon can’t claim all of it. But a star of his size moves numbers, and studios noticed.
The directors who made everyone wait
Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert haven’t released a feature since Everything Everywhere All at Once, the 2022 sci-fi movie that won seven Oscars including Best Picture. Before that they made Swiss Army Man with Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe.
They took their time picking a follow-up. Years of it. Expectations have had a long while to build.
Universal is distributing, which keeps Damon in the same house after The Odyssey. The release date is Nov. 19, 2027.
Confirmed so far alongside Damon: Sandra Oh, Charles Melton, Michael Gandolfini, PinkPantheress, Sean Kaufman, Silvia Dionicio, Jackson Kelly, Kerrice Brooks and Thalia Dudek.
The suit
Plot details are still under wraps. What’s leaked instead is better: set photos from the start of production show Damon in a Power Rangers-like suit.
Damon said the movie has “all the wildness and all the heart” audiences got from Everything Everywhere All at Once. Coming from the guy who just played a Greek hero for Nolan, that reads less like promotion and more like a warning.
Why Universal won’t let this one drift
Damon is a leading man again in a way he hasn’t been in years. The Odyssey got him his flowers, and he helped The Rip become one of Netflix's most-watched 2026 movies.
Pair that with the awards pedigree the Daniels now carry, and you have a project Universal will push through every channel it owns. The studio isn’t going to let this pairing slip by.
So here’s the image to hold onto until November 2027: the man who just played Odysseus, standing on set in something that looks like it came off a Saturday morning toy shelf, working for the directors who won Best Picture with a bagel.
