In Brief

  • Game Shutdown: Ragnarok: Monster World, a blockchain tower defense game, will completely shut down by December 30, 2025, ending all its services due to financial difficulties.
  • Service Phase-out: Starting with the cessation of sales and rewards this week, the game will remain playable until December 29, after which all servers and support channels will close.
  • Community Reaction: The shutdown announcement has stirred various responses from players across social media, ranging from frustration and accusations to empathy.

End of the Line for Ragnarok: Monster World

The blockchain-based game, Ragnarok: Monster World (ROMW), which offered a unique blend of tower defense mechanics and blockchain technology, is set to completely shut down by the end of 2025. The developers cited ongoing financial issues as the primary catalyst for the closure.

Detailed Shutdown Timeline

The process of winding down started this week with the halt of all product sales and the discontinuation of blockchain rewards. The game will continue to be available for play until December 29. On this date, all game servers will be deactivated along with web access, wallet services, and support for the game’s NFT marketplace and DEX. By December 30, all customer support and community channels will also be closed.

In their farewell message to players, the developers expressed their regrets, mentioning their exhaustive efforts to sustain the game and the tough decisions made after discussions with Gravity, the IP holder of Ragnarok.

Initial Launch and Features

Ragnarok: Monster World was launched in October 2024 by the studio ZERO X AND (0x&), under a licensing agreement with Gravity. The game was initially celebrated for integrating classic tower defense gameplay with innovative blockchain features. Players could engage in real-time battles, utilize a variety of job classes, and manage decks consisting of monster and spell cards. The game also incorporated NFTs, offering special perks to holders and introducing a market for trading and staking these digital assets.

Challenges and Controversies

The game’s journey was not without controversy. A significant schism developed with Ronin Network, the initial blockchain platform for ROMW, leading to the removal of the game from Ronin’s marketplaces in May 2025. This rift was reportedly due to 0x& exploring options with competing blockchains, which Ronin considered a breach of trust. Following this fallout, ROMW made a transition to CROSS Protocol in April 2025, where it continued operations until the recent shutdown announcement.

Community Backlash

The shutdown has ignited a range of reactions from the gaming community on social media platforms like X. Many users have expressed disappointment and frustration, with some accusing the developers of mismanagement. Meanwhile, others have shown understanding towards the development team, acknowledging the difficulties faced.

Closure and Legacy

Despite the innovative attempt to blend blockchain technology with traditional gaming mechanics, Ragnarok: Monster World’s existence was short-lived. Its closure marks a significant moment in the realm of blockchain gaming, reflecting both the potential and pitfalls of integrating emerging technologies with entertainment.
