Darth Vader walked onto the stage at Gen Con 2026. Not a cosplayer. The actual reveal, saved for the last seconds of the D&D Vision Keynote on Thursday, confirming that the world’s most famous tabletop role-playing game is trading swords and sorcery for lightsabers and the Force.
Season of Rebellion. 2027. Star Wars in Dungeons & Dragons.
The strategy fans have been dreading finally landed
When Wizards of the Coast confirmed that Magic: The Gathering’s Universes Beyond approach was coming to D&D, the guessing game started immediately. Universes Beyond is controversial and it’s lucrative, and those two things have never canceled each other out.
The first crossover, World of Warcraft, is the safe one. The MMORPG’s aesthetic and lore slot into D&D without anybody having to squint. Nobody was going to riot over that.
Then Vader snuck on at the end of the panel and the temperature changed.
D&D has been to space before, and you probably forgot
Anyone who’s been rolling dice long enough remembers Expedition to the Barrier Peaks, the 1980 adventure module for Advanced Dungeons & Dragons written by Gary Gygax. Players explored a downed spaceship stuffed with robots, aliens and laser guns. It was science fantasy before the game had a word for it.
Spelljammer, first published in 1989, was the bigger swing, an attempt to make space adventures a permanent fixture of the canon rather than a one-off oddity.
And here’s the part that gets buried: this isn’t even the first time Star Wars has shown up in a Wizards of the Coast product. The company published the Star Wars Roleplaying Game in the early ‘2000s, then let the license expire in 2010. What’s old is licensed again.
Nobody knows what the Force does to your character sheet yet
No details have been revealed about the crossover. Zero. But the World of Warcraft book got a preview, and it’s reasonable to assume the Star Wars release follows the same shape: everything players and Dungeon Masters need to run stories inside the universe George Lucas built.
The design question worth watching is how the Force gets translated into D&D 5.5e. A spin on the psionics rules seems like the obvious route, especially since psionics are making a big return in the Dark Sun campaign setting.
Get that wrong and you’ve got a spell list with a robe. Get it right and you’ve got something people actually want to play.
The X-Wing symbol nobody was supposed to see
Now the interesting math. Magic and D&D are both published by Wizards of the Coast, which Hasbro owns, and the RPG is now running the same Universes Beyond playbook that made the card game so much money. If Hasbro and Wizards landed a Star Wars deal for D&D, it’s fair to wonder whether Magic is included.
The complication: Star Wars is currently pushing its own trading card game, Star Wars Unlimited. That’s a good reason for the deal to stop at D&D products.
Except a few months ago, Magic players reported misprinted cards showing an X-Wing set symbol.
Which means the Commander table where Trekkies and Star Wars fans finally settle it is still on the board.
