The thing that wrecks your phone battery isn’t the eight hours it spends plugged in. It’s the pillow you left it under.

That’s the short version of what I found after digging through what battery engineers and the phone makers themselves actually say about overnight charging. The habit everyone quietly feels guilty about turns out to be near the bottom of the list of things that matter.

Your phone stops charging before you’re asleep

Modern smartphones run lithium batteries paired with charge management chipsets that do exactly what you’d hope. Hit 100%, and the device effectively cuts the charging process off.

So no, your phone isn’t sitting there absorbing power all night the same way it does during that frantic 15-minute top-up before you leave the house. The battery sheds a tiny amount of charge on its own, and the system briefly kicks charging back on to hold the level at 100%. Then it stops again.

Apple builds this out further with Optimized Battery Charging, which parks the phone at 80% for most of the night and only pushes to 100% shortly before you wake up. Android has its own versions: Adaptive Charging, or Samsung‘s Battery Protection, which caps charging at 85%.

Turn those on and overnight charging gets gentler still. This is designed behavior, not a loophole you’re exploiting.

The real culprit is heat, and you’re probably creating it

Here’s where the honest caveat comes in. Not a problem isn’t the same as ideal.

Lithium batteries do degrade faster when they sit at a full charge for long stretches, and that effect gets worse when the device is running warm. The enemy isn’t duration. It’s the combination of a high charge percentage and high temperature.

Which is why the sleeping-with-your-phone-under-the-pillow habit is the part worth changing. Charge it under a pillow, buried in a thick blanket or anywhere without airflow, and the heat gets trapped. That taxes the battery, and in extreme cases it creates a genuine safety issue.

The advice from people who study this is unglamorous: charge on a hard, flat surface so the device can dump the heat it generates.

Cheap chargers are the other variable

Official chargers from manufacturers, or gear from companies with a reputation to protect, include protection circuitry for voltage fluctuation and overheating. The unbranded charger you bought for the price of a coffee may not meet the same safety specs.

To be fair, most of them work fine. But the odds of something going wrong are clearly higher than with a certified charger, and that’s a bad trade for the money you saved.

The 80% rule is real, but it’s not for everyone

Plenty of people insist you should never charge past 80%. Several studies do show a lithium battery holds its performance across more charge cycles when it isn’t constantly hitting maximum.

That doesn’t make 100% bad or something to avoid at all costs. Most people want to start the day with a full tank and maximum runtime, and that’s a perfectly rational choice.

Do the math on your own upgrade cycle. If you swap phones every two or three years, the difference in battery wear will probably be small in daily use. If you’re the type who keeps a handset for many years, capping at 80% when it’s practical can help preserve battery health.

About those phones bursting into flames

The videos have done their work on all of us. In reality, those incidents are very rare, and they usually trace back to defective batteries, serious physical impact to the battery or the device itself, or unsuitable chargers and cables.

A modern phone in good condition, charging off a reliable charger, has multiple layers of protection. Still worth avoiding flammable surfaces or spots where heat can’t escape.

What I’d change tonight

Use the original charger or a good-quality one. Keep the phone off soft surfaces like a bed or a couch, and out from under pillows. Give it a hard, flat spot where air can move.

If battery longevity is your goal, charge in shorter bursts during the day. It doesn’t need to hit 100% every time. Many experts suggest not letting the battery drop below 20% and not leaving it sitting at 100% for long stretches. Small habits, compounded over years.

Ambient temperature matters too, when you can control it. Don’t leave the phone charging in blazing sun or somewhere very cold. The sweet spot is around 16 to 22 degrees Celsius.

So charge overnight. What actually shortens a battery’s life is heat, poor-quality chargers and repeated exposure to extreme conditions, and none of those are inherent to leaving your phone plugged in while you sleep. Use a decent charger, let the thing breathe, and it’ll keep performing well for years.
