Reddit’s reputation system has spent years doing a job it was never built for. On Wednesday the company said it’s building abuse prevention deep enough into the site that communities may no longer need account age and karma thresholds to decide who gets to post.
That’s the part worth paying attention to in an announcement otherwise stuffed with infrastructure and tooling updates. The changes are meant to make it easier for people to participate on the site, protect against scraping and spam, and help moderators run their communities.
Karma, if you’ve never had to think about it, goes up when your posts and comments earn upvotes for being helpful, friendly or funny. It was designed to weed out spam, bots and trolls. What it became is a wall.
The wall works, and that’s the problem
Plenty of communities lean on karma and account-age limits precisely because they work at keeping bad actors out. They also keep out anyone who just made an account for a legitimate reason. Reddit says it wants stronger built-in abuse prevention to absorb more of that moderation load so communities can open up.
“This will make it easier for genuine new users to participate and easier for mods to welcome them with confidence,” Reddit’s announcement stated.
The company didn’t say karma is going away. It suggested its importance could dwindle in the future, which is a meaningfully different promise and worth holding Reddit to.
What the LLMs are actually doing
The mechanism here is Rules Hub, Reddit’s suite of AI moderation tools, and the test is expanding. It lets moderators choose when a community rule gets enforced automatically and what action follows. More than 700 communities have been using it; now all new communities can test it, and later this year it goes out broadly to new and existing communities alike.
Rules Hub uses large language models to judge whether a post or comment matches the intent of a rule. Reddit says that lets it “better handle nuance,” natural language and edge cases. Intent matching is the hard part of moderation and the part keyword filters have always failed at, so the ambition is real. Whether an LLM gets edge cases right often enough to replace a karma gate is the open question, and Reddit hasn’t published numbers on that.
The smaller tools tell you what’s broken
Reddit also expanded a tool that helps moderators tell users about community rules while they’re posting and commenting, plus another that helps members set their flair, the custom tag that appends to your name and only shows in the community you’re posting in.
Read those alongside the company’s own diagnosis. “Today, new users can encounter invisible barriers like account age and karma thresholds, unclear removals, and poor community discovery,” Reddit explained. “We want new users around the world to be able to easily find relevant communities, understand their rules and norms, and make useful contributions.”

Old Reddit gets attention too. The company said it would shift the legacy desktop site’s moderator workflows to its new stack and migrate other critical bots.
Why now
On last week’s second-quarter earnings call, executives told investors that a near-term goal is converting Reddit’s half-billion weekly active users into daily users through product updates. Lowering the barrier for newcomers fits that goal precisely.
The quarter itself was strong: revenue of $805 million and earnings per share of $1.25, both above estimates. The stock sank anyway, on what CEO Steve Huffman described as “choppy” search referral traffic.
If you moderate a community that’s been running a 100-karma minimum for years, the thing to watch isn’t the announcement. It’s whether Rules Hub catches the spam wave the first weekend you turn that minimum off.
