Ted Lasso’s 4th season is secretly the start of a trilogy

Jason Sudeikis just quietly rewrote what season four of Ted Lasso is. It isn’t a victory lap. It’s chapter one of three.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Sudeikis said the new chapter of the series has been designed as a three-season story. Do the math and that means Ted Lasso could run all the way to a sixth season.

That’s a bigger swing than anyone was making when the show wrapped what looked like a tidy ending.

What Ted’s actually walking back into

Season four sends Ted back to AFC Richmond, but not to the job you remember. He’s taking charge of the club’s newly formed women’s team, and the story centers on a new group of players.

So the show is rebuilding its bench from scratch. Again.

Familiar faces aren’t being shelved, though. Roy Kent, Coach Beard and Rebecca Welton are all back in the foreground.

The writers are already ahead of you

Here’s the detail that tells you how serious this is: the writers’ room for the season five story is expected to open in August.

Nobody staffs a room for a season that’s a vague hope. They staff it when there’s a plan.

The catch nobody’s advertising

Seasons five and six haven’t officially been greenlit. Not yet.

The continuation depends heavily on how audiences respond to the show’s return, which is a polite way of saying the trilogy exists on paper and in a room in August and nowhere else.

Which puts an unusual amount of weight on season four. A three-season arc is a promise you can only keep if enough people show up for the first third of it.
