In Brief:

  • The Sandbox (official site) released Studio Beta with Engine 14, introducing significant architectural changes.
  • The new SceneNode structure simplifies asset placement and enhances prefab handling for creators.
  • The update also improves multiplayer replication and introduces public access to AI tools.

The Sandbox unveils Engine 14

The Sandbox has launched Engine 14 as part of its Studio Beta update, marking a significant shift in its development framework. The update replaces the legacy Actor/SceneComponent structure with a unified SceneNode format, streamlining the process for creators.

Now, assets can be directly placed in scenes without requiring an Actor container, which simplifies operations for developers. This approach suggests a firm commitment to evolving the platform, evidenced by the break from backward compatibility.

Enhanced prefab management

Creators can now interact with prefab items more effectively, as they are treated as first-class assets. Prefabs can be created and modified directly in the main scene view without switching modes. Users can override individual instances while maintaining their connection to the original prefab, addressing previous pain points with GUID regeneration during saves.

This enhancement positions The Sandbox more competitively alongside Unity and Unreal, particularly in building repeatable elements like enemy spawns and modular components.

Multiplayer improvements

The multiplayer replication system has undergone a rework, introducing ReplicationGroup channels. Servers can now spawn networked objects visible only to specific players, making it easier to manage instanced loot and tailor experiences for individual users.

AI tools and new templates

Public access to the AI Assistant expands its functionality across all Studio projects, streamlining setup and integrating more AI providers. The Genesys MCP Server now allows AI agents to execute multiple scene changes concurrently, moving beyond basic interactions.

Furthermore, the update adds two new templates—Side-scrolling and 3rd-person Action—while improving features like multi-object selection and navigation mesh calculation. These changes confirm that Engine 14 is a foundational overhaul, rather than a simple patch, with three key breaking changes reinforcing its architectural transformation.

“Sandbox’s direction is clear, and we’re setting the stage for more complex interactions now,” said a spokesperson from The Sandbox.
