Twenty-three people are out at Double Fine Productions. That’s roughly 25% of the studio’s staff, gone just a few weeks after the company announced it was going independent again following seven years under Xbox.
The news came from the studio itself, posted on Bluesky.
Independence has a price tag, and this is what it looks like on the invoice.

Double Fine founder Tim Schafer explained that the decision, hard as it was, was judged necessary for the studio’s survival and for keeping the lights on. Going independent again, he said, means the team now has to be shaped into a size it can actually afford to sustain.
He then described everyone leaving as important members of Double Fine, pointing to what they contributed both to the games and to the culture of the studio.
The company also committed to supporting the 23 affected employees as much as it can.
The seven-year Xbox chapter, over fast
Do the math on the timeline and it’s brutal. Seven years inside Microsoft’s stable, then a return to independence announced, then layoffs within weeks. The gap between the celebratory announcement and the staff reduction is measured in weeks, not quarters.
That’s the part worth sitting with. A studio doesn’t shed a quarter of its people because things are going according to plan.
What a smaller Double Fine means
Schafer framed the cuts around one word: survival. Not restructuring, not realignment. Survival, and the ability to keep operating.
A studio of Double Fine’s size doesn’t have a lot of padding to begin with. Losing 25% of it changes what the place can build and how fast.
Twenty-three names, one post, and a founder telling everyone that the people walking out the door helped make the studio what it is.
